Removed from hard core after using a portal

How about a small area around portals and waypoints that causes monsters to flee and/or makes everything (players and monsters, to avoid abuse) invulnerable? Some sort of preventive measure?

I think that's where the invulnerability comes in. An idea like this though would be exploited to hell. You could pull a pack of mobs to a small corridor, throw up a TP, get on the opposite side of the TP and range them down from safety.

There's always a way to implement something elegantly so that it cannot be abused. For example, instead, the area around portals and waypoints could make everything invisible to everything else. I don't know how practical that would be network wise, but I have another idea as well:

Why not compare the time at which a player entered a portal with the time at which a player has supposedly died. Let me explain from the point of view of the server:

Normal process as I understand it
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
1- Player is in an instance, fighting monsters. (From the client side, player enters portal now)

2- Player has foolishly stopped moving for some reason and is now dead

3- Player went into a portal, start moving him to another instance... whoops, he's dead!

Proposed process
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
1- Player is in an instance, fighting monsters. (From the client side, player enters portal now)

2- Player has foolishly stopped moving for some reason and is now dead

3- Player went into a portal, start moving him to another instance... did he die? Hmm... At the time player died, could he have been waiting at the portal? Yes? Then he is not dead after all, put him in town like nothing happened.

Isn't it a strange condition to begin with if a player can somehow manage to be dead when the server tries to move him from one instance to another? Something that could be checked against? After all, you can't move when you're dead, so how would that situation happen normally?

I agree here, it seems strange BECAUSE, if you are dead you cant click on a portal. So clearly the instance where you were able to click on a portal before "dying" should be an exception to the rule.

I mean i already re-rolled my witch and im half way through act 1, but i feel like this is a feature that should be added or looked at being added (or maybe some other clever way of "compensating".

It just makes sense to me that if you were able to "click on portal" that action should be check-able during the "is this player alive and able to be in hardcore" check to be able to allow them to not be dead due to latency. Granted I am not so skilled as to say this is do-able technically, i just think the logic makes more sense than the current logic. Only GGG knows if this is something they could do.

Evidently others have reported this issue as well. If game can crash while using a portal, and that can remove you from HC.
You can die while using a portal, and the league transfer will cause a disconnect when it tries to put you in a hardcore instance.
When you click the portal, there's a delay before the server gets that message, and further delay while it actually creates the new instance if it doesn't exist, then as it does the actual transfer. It is possible for monsters to kill you during this time. When this happens, the game will disconnect when it sees a (now) Default-league character attempting to be placed in a Hardcore instance.

Sorry about your character. We have been working on new systems to reduce the time that you're vulnerable during the transition, but note that due to latency it can never be entirely removed.

My problem is, why isn't this issue more widely covered and perhaps make a sticky about it? There are dozens and dozens of threads with the same problem, this problem didn't exist in diablo so people don't know about this "issue" with getting killed in tp's. All 3 of my HC characters were killed off in this fashion and it's not like I went in with barely 100 hp, I had more than 1.5k hp health in one of the times I went in and still died.

I honestly wasted so much time playing these HC characters due to a flaw in the game that isn't explained anywhere until it's too late. Ontop of that, I'm playing on america servers with ~60 ping. I don't know how this is a "latency" problem, it sounds to me like a programming problem.

You are brave, haha. I just made a new level 1 and am going to sit tight until the issue is addressed in entirety. Not worth wasting time again if (dare I say "when") it happens again, since I am the kind of guy who is prone to such things happening. Figure I can take the downtime to take a close look at spec, equipment, and what route I want to take now that I know how to play the game. Unless stated by Customer Support, I certainly would not count on there being any legitimate provable compensation for it. If they did allow for that, everyone who died due to whatever could play that card. I hope it doesn't happen to you again, though.

I sucks because I do want to go back, but if I do and it happens again I won't want to play anymore; that's just me though. Now maybe if I actually died due to stupidity, I could live with that, but I plan to take all measures to prevent that ;) If the game beats me, it beats me, and I can totally accept Default, but until that happens, Hardcore it is!

Just got my witch killed after clicking the teleport. Killed vaal on solo with it and felt so good but ignored that ranged dude that he summons. I didn't even get past the loading screen. Just got kicked out saying "Your character is not on this league (and you know it)" or something similar to that :/

Edit: Char was on hardcore, now bumped down to softcore

Not sure what you did here, but you posted as though you were quoting me, but im guessing this was your own thoughts?

Still i understand your sentiment, but my point in this whole discussion is

1. This issue should be listed as a known issue in the main sticky
2. This IS an issue that many players (EG Customers) have reported as negatively effecting their experience so i would venture it is worth GGG addressing before launching the game. out of beta (isnt that the whole point in us playing the beta?)
3. Everyone who is saying this makes them not want to play anymore has a fair right to feel that way but should still take a deep breathe and realize that A. its still beta, and B. its an indie game that is better than many block buster games. A great game regardless of "difficulties"
4. As an aside I dont know why anyone would have both the stance of "I will only play hardcore" and "I died, im never playing again" it seems unreasonable. Either play hard core only, and accept the re-roll regardless of the why, or play default and try not to die. If you want to be "Hardcore" about it then only play a character until you feel you "legitimately" died then stop and roll a new one.

GGG needs to address this problem. I can say there are atleast 30 threads on this problem and probably hundreds of players who died to this.
I'm not sure if there are 2 separate problems. One is "dying" while using a portal and I've been seeing threads of people dying who claim there were absolutely no mobs or they logged off after clearing a dungeon. I'm still pretty worried about playing a new HC character even after the patch that prevents being attacked while loading...

Hey Woodyfly, I think you can safely begin leveling a new HC character again, as it covers all manners of zone-changing. I was definitely pleased to see it and happy I didn't have to wait it out for too long before the issue was addressed :) Back I go, now with more confidence in zoning.
