Is he one of those important figures that we just pretend doesn't have any impact or clues to the game?
I think I almost have it figured out now, and I think maybe the darkness in POE is wanting us to stay alive....but die at the same time. We're being tested...I think. All of us are being tested. It wants us more than anyone else. Reading about Zerphi, seems to almost connect something in my brain. If I focus too much on the orgins of virtue gems I get too confused, but if I ignore that for a moment and read everything going on in the past and preset, it seems to follow a pattren. Death and corruption, and Zerphi. What bothers me is how he died...that makes no sense. But it seems he is the start of all of it. He is the single point in a chain of terrible and tragic events.
...The way he killed people. Gemlings..and his body being the same age as all of his kills. "Feed the corruption"... hints are everywhere and in such a way it's not even trying to hide. I'm just too stupid to connect all the dots right now. Gems are the biggest offender to my confusion. We just slap them into our gear and don't ask any questions. Like what. The. Fuck. I'm using the "power of the divine" in the form of gems but NEVERMIND WHERE IT CAME FROM. We just whack a zombie and there it is, a powerful item that allows us to do things a normal human cannot do.
So making Gemlings is a lost art, somehow they figued out how to put it inside humans and not mutate them. "Puppets on a string", you seem to need a strong will? In order to not mutate. You kill dominus and he turns into a creature...just like Merveil. It seems death is linked to the gems, the gems seem to have a personality of their own I think. All these clues, and all this time has passed and I still cannot put it together or even find out if I am on the right track...

And then he used his pickaxe to remove the remainder of the dirt, revealing the crusted old chest that was hidden away for so long.

*Meanwhile in Sarn*
"Guys! Something is wrong. We've been using these gems but no one really questions where they come from!" Pilla said, looking over the gems in her stash.
"Shut up!" said the Shadow returning from another massive killing in the Sceptre Of God. His bag loaded with gems and unique weapons much diffrent from his fellow exiles. "I've heard enough of your madness Witch. Day in and day out you go to that damned library looking for "clues" to this damned island. We're exiles! Get use to it!" he mocked as he dumped his scrolls into his stash tab.
"You seem familiar with her" said the templar standing near the Bulletin board. He was looking to find more comrades to undergo a mission given by no other than Elreon the former Templar of Oriath. Who recently raised his price on crafting after making profits from the needing exiles.
“She spits out the same bullshit over and over, day and night! Why are gems here, who made them, why are gemlings a thing of the past now! Guess what Witch! Dominus is dead! Emperor Citus is dead! The empire of the past is no more and these rich shiny gems are ours for the taking!”
Pilla stepped back a bit, her eyes tracing back and forth between the exiles who all now stared at her in disgust. She stepped forth with open arms. “There is a darkness here that still lingers, do you not ponder the Vaal!? What about the old empire!? Why are these dangerous gems here in the first place!” she said, her voice picking up bravery as she challenged the others complacent demeanor.
Without warning, a Marauder suddenly grabs her by her robes, lifting her frail tiny body from the sands of Sarn. With a grunt of a beast, he bears his teeth at her face to face. “I too, am sick of your ramblings, Witch. Those gems you stand and read like a foolish warrior unsure of their weaponry... that is what will get you killed here in Wraeclast! It is not where the tool is made that matters, but how it will protect and prosper us warriors in the battle. Little girl, you spend much time in wonder and little time in battle. Wraeclast is all about the strong, perhaps I should thin out the layer of weakness in you. Right here, right now.

You missed somethings about the game I think.
Merveil never turns into a monster. She IS always a monster, who uses her gem's ability to create illusions of beauty and wealth to lure people into her trap. You just break the illusions after first stage of fight, and completely beat it after killing her.
For Dominus I think the situation is similar. The dominus body we fight is just the illusion cast by real dominus, the old guy hooked up to cables and machines in the upper balcony of Dominus fight area. Once we kill his projections he is also wasted.
Also we are not gemlings. We do not place stones in our body, that art is lost and that's why piety and dominus was experimenting on people to try and recover it. We just use a weak substitute for that; placing them in tharmaturgical items. Vorici explains all that if you talk to him.
