I'm wasteful and just replace the batteries every 3 months, even though I know they last for 5-6 easily.
Edit: I am also sorry for your loss - I know I was quite irate when I lost my first HC character. Started a witch. Level 40 templar and level 29 ranger; my witch is only level 8 and just got my first /shrug
