Map FAQ: A guide to all the areas in the game!

Spoiler
Please take into account that all maps are random and that this guide is based off the maps i have seen in my 1 month of playtime on 3 seperate characters and by all means may not represent your map, please use at your own risk!

Now Updated!!!

After playing this game for roughly a month, I've decided to make a map FAQ to anwser questions that i have seen an infinite amount of times and anwsered (cause im a nice guy and like to help out) several times within 10 minute spans. too be honest im making this FAQ so i can actually play the game and look for bugs instead of anwsering questions that really people should figure out for themselves. so in order from terraces to maelstrom, here are the common locations of important things:

Twilight strand: follow the beach to win!

Terraces:
exit= (pathway 1) up one lvl (maybe 2) then head northeast, go back down a lvl(or 2) continue to the end. (Pathway 2) head north until you find a corridor between 2 giant rocks, head through it then head back down to the beach, continue to the end. However, if you have not done the medicine chest quest, head south of the exit to the Mud Flats, to the tidal island.

Tidal Island:
The medicine chest is located here!!! to get to it there are 2 ways. 1. the safer but longer way is follow the beach all the way around the island until you get to the back of it (the part that is blocked off at the entrance) kill the rare mob for the medicine chest.
2. the quicker but possible more dangerous way, is to cut straight through the island huging the westernwall until it leads down onto the beach then follow the beach north still hugging that wall you followed to get to the beach, again kill the rare mob for the chest.

Mud flats:
exit=head northeast, for gauranteed success you can follow the beach after finding the eggs and when you hit the wall head north and you will find it.
egg locations= random, however are either in a triangular formation or a straight line heading northeast(that is if you headed northwest and found the first egg in the line).

(tidal passage the depths and tidal passage lvl 2 are still a work in progress, will update tomorrow)
Tidal passage lvl 1: map generation is random, however most of times i have entered the tidal passage, the exit was southwest.

flooded passage: dead end, however nice giant rare mob worth good xp and is a quest to kill him. also a chest with good loot, if you need loot go to the end of the passage, if not skip the flooded passage and continue to the end of tidal passage lvl 1.

tidal passage lvl 2.: pretty much... follow the road, there are not that many dead ends and the dead ends are short, once you beat tidal passages on the lowest difficulty you will know your way around when you get to harder lvls

Ledges:... a straight path... FOLLOW IT TO WIN! :)

the rocky climb: again a straight path, follow the climb going east by north east, until you find a narrow path, follow the narrow path to the lower prison. the narrow patch will eventually lead north.

lower prison: truly random, though in my play through the exits were either northwest or south east of where you start.

Prison: Read lower prison

Upper prison: boss area, defeat the boss and continue on for fat loots!

Prison gate: head southeast of the exit of upper prison until you find a gap in the wall that leads down, follow that passage until you get to ship graveyard.

Graveyard (SIDE QUEST AREA): yes there is a side quest here. follow the beach north east until you find a small cove, enter the small cove and talk to the NPC, the NPC will give you a quest involving a slave girl and the all flame. the most common locations of the all flame were either, A. directly west of the quest location or B. northwest of the location, either way hug the west wall and you will find the slave girl eventually, she is marked on the map with a green shading. go back kill the npc and turn the quest in. To exit the graveyard, head north of the NPC and follow the beach to you find the exit.

The coves: either a straight path, (meaning follow the beach to win!) or a slight deviation going inland then following the beach (this is more common, but again its random) at the end you should come upon the caves of woe

the caves of woe: has 2 ways of getting to the exit,
option one: head north through the caves and go a winding path that takes you north turns east then goes south then spits you out at the bridge to the exit to caverns of anger
option two, head south east accross the bridges , follow the bridges but remain a steady course of east, follow the bridge path to the end.

Caverns of Anger: Similar to caverns of woe, except both lead you into winding caves but again the exit is (usually) east by north east.

mervils lair: boss area, if your a melee, lead mervils minions (they appear after you "kill" mervil the first time)away from the boss into the path know as the hot gates (the entrance to mervils location (in other words the biggest open area in the cave)) where their numbers will count for nothing, because THIS IS POE!!! if your ranged, then run away and spam to win, though leading them to the path know as the hot gates is viable to any class (and for any situation :) ) after killing her minions kill mervil and continue through the cave to the exit.

The Forest: Same as strand but instead of a beach its a stream! Follow the stream to win!!!

Forest encampment: Head northeast first, southwest is harder so unless you out lvl southwestern area, head northeast.

Old Fields (assuming you went northeast):OMG A ROAD HOW CONVENIENT! Follow the road to win!!

The Crossroads: as the name implies this is a crossroads, head northeast for broken bridge (the boss you headed northeast for in the first place) head northwest for Chamber of Sins head southeast for Fellshrine ruins (follow the road in fellshrine to reach the church

Chamber of Sins lvl 1: (in progress)
assuming you went northwest for the chamber of sins and headed up the ridges to get to it, you should now be at the chamber of sins. i plan on doing more runs of the chamber to get a better understnading of it. i will be updating this part of the FAQ tomorrow.

Fellshrine ruins:
Road... you know what to do...

Church lvl 1: work in progress will update tomorrow.

Broken Bridge:... a road... follow it! head accross the giant broken bridge kill the boss and take a TP home. Note: you can choose to not kill this boss and take the 8% resistance increase, however, by accepting this 8% increase you will have to fight the other 2 bandits and you will no longer have access to the passive point if you were to kill all 3.

River crossings: Assuming you went back to forest encampment/or are starting at forest encampment and headed southwest, you are now in the River crossings there are exits within river crossings however the first you should head to is the Dark Forest to get there follow the road.

Dark Forest: this area has a road. follow it to win, however since weavers chambers now has a purpose, when you hit a section of the road that has spider webs next to it, head into the forest, weavers entrance is kinda hard to find, but if you see a huge cluster of trees (as in a vluster you cannot walk through almost like a hill) then walk around that and you will find the entrance to weavers eventually.

Weaver's chambers: you are not looking for an entrance to lvl 2 simply find the boss and kill it, the boss does fire dmg and hits like a truck, if you are melee, try to kill everything in the room before you take on weaver... or you will die! (i should know) if you are ranged... then your lucky as hell cause this boss is really slow if you know what your doing.
Alira's camp: a Wild goose chase, kill everything you see, chances are Alira will run from you and if everything is dead before you find her it will make things easier for you, though usually (atleast evertime i've done this quest) she is in the northwest corner of the map (or in the vicinity of the northwest) kill her take TP and repeat River crossings. Note: when attempting to kill
River crossings (Alternate route, Cathedral of bones):
follow the road in river crossings till you notice a break in the northern part of the road that turns into a dirt path, follow that dirt path to the Cathedral

Cathedral of Bones lvl1: as the name implies, expect alot of skeletons, follow your way through the cathedral, the exit is trully randomly placed, however, dead ends are small and not at all risky, plus you can always use the extra XP! (edit: found that the exit is usually in the southwestern area unless you started in the southwest... again.. the dungeon sections of this FAQ are still a work in progress, i will update this section tomorrow.)

Cathedral of Bones lvl 2: same as the Cathedral lvl 1, the exit is random, however more likely than not it is located in the northeast. its marked by a long set of stairs going up. (working on confirming this

Pools and streams: Oak is located here, Oak locations are random, but normally are northeast or northwest of the entrance. you will also find the thicket to the northwest if you hug the wall from the beginning, but currently the thicket has no function (and still has no function except loot). kill Oak A. return for your reward, B. follow the north wall, or the eastern stream north, until you get to the waterfall caves. Note: if you do not kill oak you get 45 life however you will not have access to alira's 30 mana or kairtyn's resist buff, or the passive point for killing all 3.

Waterfall caves lvl 1: follow the caves southwest, the entrance to Waterfall Cave's lvl 2 will be located either in the south, or in the west. in either case the waterfall caves are pretty straight forward and hard to get lost in.
Waterfall caves lvl 2: follow the caves southwest (again) till you find a weird hole in the wall, head through it to the "secret city", make your way to the back of the "city" when you find the Dark Altar head to the door behind it if you killed (or sided with 1 bandit and killed the others) and you have the combined amulet, then you will be able to unlock the door by giving the amulet to the altar.
Congradulations!!! you completed all the maps and are now on the next difficulty.

Maelstrom of chaos: you all heard of the maelstrom of chaos, you are finally in merciless and can't wait to do some runs of it. to get to the Maelstrom of chaos, complete all the act 1 and act 2 missions and then head through the waterfall caves lvl 1 and 2 to the twilight strand (again) after doing this on merciless difficulty head back to the Forest encampment and talk to the NPC who assigned the Bandit quests. he will give you access to the maelstrom of chaos. you access the maelstrom of chaos via the Merciless waypoint.

And thats it! i hope this guide proves to be helpful source of information to all you new people. and hopefully this will free up more time for me to actually play the game instead of awnsering the same question over and over and over again all day!

Edit:
downloading new patch as we speak, will make changes as i see them, please note that i will have to do an area multiple times in order to get multiple directions and even after that there may be a random 1/100000000 chance that the map you get wasn't any of the ones i got. however i will update soon, probably by the end of the week.

Great comprehensive post! The descriptions are pretty accurate.
I'll post the changes needed when 0.9.3 is deployed to the Beta realm.
I'll sticky this for a bit and get some exposure.
