My original suggestion that the damage can be escaped by following some smart route seems not to be the case. It looks to me for now that these missions are just a random win-lose (depending on the mission configuration) for non-tanky characters.
That's OK, I still like the mini-expansion since the rest of the masters offer interesting gameplay.

GGG keep adding things to the game that ideally should be manually dodged. However, they seem to also not play their game or they'd realize that because the netcode is such ass, you can't do any of those things.

Therefore, approach it like everything else in the game and design a character that is as safe as possible and can facetank most things. You want multiple lines of defense in every aspect, so that when the game fucks you once, it isn't enough to kill you.

I've become more and more convinced over time that the balance team plays on some sort of hardline/LAN connection -- or worse, a completely offline version of the game -- rather than actual, real-life type connections where latency and desynch are massive issues.
