You aren't losing out one way or the other, it just depends on how much time/effort you want to put in, and what kind of grinding you tolerate best

Before 1.2 I could farm corrupted areas for midnight fragments and sell them for 20 chaos (that's 10 regrets right there), though corrupted areas are harder to find now with the 1.2 patch.

Once you are able to run maps, it is much easier to farm currency. If you identify all your magic finds and vendor up, as per previous threads, you can farm currency without wasting too much time (farm as you level). Loot drops in maps are phenomenal compared to the storyline game.
