The -15% exp penalty is obnoxiously bad outdated design.

" Guess why it's rarely seen today? That's because a majority of the people playing games today are not gamers, they are whining children who needs an easy game to be able to progress. Anyone who played a Ultima Online PK server knows how much adrenaline death penalties add. |

OP is right, instead of xp penalty the game should be hardcore permadeath mode only.

What if not xp penalty?
>Lose random orbs from your inventory or chest? >Make monsters regain all hp if you die? >Introduce gear durability and orbs repairing them? ...No thanks. Please come up with some kind of suggestion next time you feel you're getting owned. |

I kinda agree that a big death penalty combined with many pokemon situations and a lot of almost-instant kills (with no warning) is weird. Then again... PoE is described as a hardcore and very random game. I feel that GGG are not interested in catering to the widest audience, but to the specific hardcore gamers who will stick with the game for years.
For some it's a flaw, for others it's a great aspect of the game. |

Many MMO today tries to do away with grinding due to the mainstream demand for instant gratification. People want things to happen fast rather than having to put in some long term effort in order to progress. Path of Exile may not be a MMO, but I believe the game design is meant to give a sense of investment from the effort you put in, not just in terms of time spend brute-force grinding, but to think about your build, to do things like farming in attempt to better your character.
If the game is easy, then anyone can easily sail their way to max level and once you are at level 100, you hardly feel like you've achieved anything. Someone raised a very good point about no such thing as outdated game mechanics. Many great computer RPG games like Planescape, Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate was based on the rules in a pen and paper game, Dungeons and Dragons, which was created long before personal computers existed. Decades later, even today, people are still enjoying these games based on D&D rule set. Granted they no longer make RPG games like these, which is a huge loss IMO. I mean if you really think about it (to the ones suggesting gear repair etc). The xp penality is great for the way this game is.
It can be very difficult and you might have a toon that just does not work. Well if you were to have repair bills you'd run yourself possibly broke (a lot of people probably would). So now your new rerolled toon would be broke. It would suck. The xp penalty only effects the toon you are on and if that toon is broke you will know it and keep losing xp. Which is not a big deal just reroll and keep all that loot you have to start back up again to making a toon that works. XP penalty works great and it works for this game and it's difficulty level. If we were to switch things around it would be a bad mix. Now your rerolling toons with nothing because by the time you figured out this toon did not work your broke (at least a good amount of players would be trying to force something to work or hang in there for them next few passives that end up not working out). It just works perfect imo some are just to blind to see that. EDIT: in the end this type of penalty helps you. Tells you your build sucks without bring that penalty to the next toon that you could possibly power level from saved gear and orbs etc. Phenom 2 955 Quad Oc'ed 4.2 Ghz - Biostar A780L3G 760G 2 x 2gb Adata Gamer DDR3 1333 - GTX480 EVGA Undervolted & Oc'ed SeaSonic S12II Bronze 620W - OCZ Vertex 2 55gb/OCZ Agility2 120gb/500gb WD Green Last edited by rumbl3#3827 on Feb 4, 2013, 11:37:02 AM

It punishes you hard in higher difficulties when losing 15% of your exp on levels 80 beyond would just infuriate you wildly since getting 15% of a level beyond 80 is haaaaard work. But look at it this way, this only applies to Softcore and I play Hardcore because there is no consensus to play Softcore since HC characters don't get deleted but get moved to SC so HC gives me more adrenaline rush, more concentration and more fun in the end. If I die in HC I wont play with my character in SC, I'll just make a new HC Character and see how far I can go with my build. This is why making your perfect build is so crucial in this game, without a build and the know how of all the monsters and what they do you will die often. HC chars don't care about the EXP penalty. Don't care about the SC chars.
