Your League ideas
The shortest temporary league mentioned so far has been the 24 hour one. Are there any plans to do shorter temporary leagues than that? The thing is, for how long would one have to play PoE to be competitive in a 24 hour temp league? Eight hours or more? I'm just not sure I could swing that. I'm a grownup (technically), so I gotta like do laundry and stuff. Are there any plans for 2-4 hour leagues?
Making a league that short might allow you do something a little different. For instance, players have to sign up for the league before it starts. Once it starts, if you didn't sign up, you can't join. You have to be in the league the whole time it runs, if you log off/get disconnected you're out. Let's say this league is hardcore as well. 1st half hour: No magic items drop 2nd half hour: Traps become more frequent 3rd half hour: Unique monsters have higher spawn rate 4th half hour: A random debuff gets put on all players After all that is done, who ever is left gets put in a single elimination pvp tourney. Edit: I know the no logging off may seem kinda harsh, but they kinda have to be logged on for the end tourney anyway. Plus you could make the world modifiers random and more frequent. Like, every 10 minutes, the world gets a new modifier to make it harder. If players weren't logged on for one or two of those modifiers, it wouldn't be fair as some modifiers would be more difficult than others. Perhaps there would be no modifier for the first ten minutes, after that, no one is allowed to join the league. I am a poor freezingly cold soul

Going along with the random world modifiers, what if instead of re-setting every time and only have one world modifier, they just stacked. So, as the temp league went on, it would just get harder and harder. That would fun for a short temp hardcore league.

I think that's a cool idea, Oasisbhrnw. I like how everything can change any minute. You could be working on a group of enemies with fireballs and then all of sudden they all get fire resistance. It'd keep you on your toes switching out skill gems and adapting to the situation.
I also like the idea of some leagues only lasting for a couple of hours. A lot of us do have jobs and other obligations so we can't really compete in a 24 hour league against people who have that kind of time. Forum Sheriff

" Like a league that doesn't track total progress/XP but instead tracks progress/XP efficiency. Total XP earned divided by total time played. Players are ranked by their XP per hour (or minute?) rating. Forum Sheriff

I think over time I might get less efficient in my play time, more hanging around town looking at gear and skill gems etc.
Could be a good idea if your looking at a limited time league like 3-4 days and it only counts people who have spent a certain reasonable amount of time on, so you don't have people on for 10 minutes speeding through an area for real efficient play then stopping to win the league. Cause I can see for the 24 hour leagues people going crazy with stacks of redbull being unbeatable and playing non-stop. |

" True. But more powerful monsters would give more XP each so when you did go out to kill, you'd be bringing in a much bigger XP haul. Certainly the league would encourage making your in town decisions quickly and getting back to killing. You would just have to balance the time cost of trading for a weapon or fiddling with gems with the benefit that those actions would give you toward killing efficiency. Forum Sheriff

" No. League that limits character playing on let's say 3 hours per day maximum, with it's own ranking. In a 24/7 playable game, without such a league it's pointless and actualy insulting to speak about achievements and competition. Yes, I'm tired of no-lifers and shared account owners "elitism" (damn LOSERS). "I am The Banisher, the ill will that snuffs the final candle." - Seal of Doom (MTG)

A daily time limit would work too I guess. Although the trouble there is that the time limit could cut people off in the middle of what they were doing. They could be almost done with a quest and then be forced to restart it the next day.

I don't think making restrictions to prevent cheating in temporary leagues should be a real worry at this point. I think most people will be playing short term leagues for the fun and challenge of it. It's just a really fun idea.
The only way people will start cheating is if there is a good reason to, and perhaps there just won't be. Can anyone imaging playing somebody else's character on and off for a week or a month just to help get them an item? It just doesn't seem like a very fun or rewarding proposition.
