That's not a change in "traps" in general. Fire trap has always dealt spell damage. Bear Trap does not deal spell damage.

In my experience fire damage trap damage and ele damage works...spell damage does not affect fire trap

spell damage affects the exploding part I think. There are 2 parts to a fire trap: it explodes on contact and the burning ground.

This absolutely melts anything anywhere nearby if you cause burn, and usually long after the initial enemies have died.

Reduced Mana (its not a cheap skill)
Fire Penetration (even more damage)

Iron Will (if you have the strength to back it up)
Culling Strike (mostly for the extra chunk of damage)
Chance to Flee (burning mobs will potentially run to others)
An important facet of Fire Trap most people don't seem to stress is that the damage is not you.
It can't be reflected towards you and it will work exactly the same if you have Ancestral Bond.
Fire penetration is always better than increased burning damage.
