Projectile trajectory bug - Game Video and images included!

That picture doesn't really help the discussion.
Moving is fine. I have no problem running around any map. The problem is when you are holding shift to just attack the mechanic you are defending causes players to miss most of their shots when they first start playing. Game Design 101 - If a new player does not understand how to use the mechanic or finds it difficult it needs to be changed. |

It does add to the discussion. The firing and movement axes should line up.
If the firing angle is changed, movement would follow a different axis. You click straight to your right. You will move straight to your right. You will fire arrows to the bottom-right. What? |

I am not sure which side you are supporting, I haven't really tested this compared to movement but I know firing to the right doesn't fire close to the right. Also it annoys me greatly that if you click on the target it will aim perfectly but if you are clicking on the line to the target it will miss.

How does real 3 dimensional movement in space not fit into the conversation? Your arrow should not fly on a 2 dimensional plane while your caharcter walks in a 3 dimensional world. (Which is how d3 and TL do it)
" Just think of the game like a chess board and your cursor on the ground. It sounds counter-intuitive to aim at their feet but once you're used to playing in an actual 3d world that doesn't hold your hand you'll be fine. |

The problem is not that the game is using a 3D movement system. The problem is that projectiles are using a 3D movement system but a 2D targeting system.
It is counter-intuitive to aim at their feet. Why are you defending something that is counter-intuitive? Movement is fine because that is intuitive. I want my feet to go here so I will click here. Aiming is not. I want to shoot here so I click below here so that my arrow follows the correct path. Can you imagine playing a FPS where you shoot at their feet for headshots? "It may be counter-intuitive but when you get used to the 3D world that doesn't hold your hand you will be fine." All they would need to change is the targeting mechanic while holding SHIFT or whatever key you have mapped to attack in place. That way movement will remain unchanged and stay intuitive while targeting will improve from being counter-intuitive to intuitive. |

" I am defending realism. The aiming is not 2D just because your cursor is on the ground because the ground is not flat. the trajectory is accuate as is. In the other games they fake it with optical illusions. I rarely tell anybody to not play but if you lack depth perception then you should consider an alternative game. I realize physics 101 can be hard to grasp but this is a rediculous thread. P.S. I said it "sounds" counter-intuitive. But in reality it very much is intuitive. Its all about the viewing angle and how you preceive it. Last edited by Sophung#2030 on Jan 30, 2013, 4:18:19 PM

" How are you defending realism? If you click on an enemy the targeting knows how to fire correctly. If the enemy now moves directly towards you and your cursor is no longer on the enemy but directly behind him you will now shoot high. Sounds super real to me... I am sure so many archers can hit a target at 100 yards but as soon as that target moves a bit closer their aim goes down the drain. The cursor is on a 2D plain. If you think otherwise you need help. The cursor does not follow the terrain, it stays on its nice 2D plain people expect it to act as such. I have fine depth perception. I can play the game fine with this problem but that doesn't mean I am going to accept it. People like you are why games don't improve. The OP offered a valid point and backed it up with nice visuals and you respond with "That's how it is, deal with it or get out." For someone who apparently likes this game you are not doing very much to help it. I am sure you have played this game more than I have and have gotten used to firing at weird angles to hit your target. Congrats, good for you. That does not mean everyone else must do it. If people who just start the game find this mechanic to be in the wrong it should be looked at. This has nothing to do with physics. The only physics this game possesses is collision detection. I have made a 3D physics engine and this discussion is unrelated to physics. If the arrows followed an arc then yes physics might be a part of it, but they don't. Biology 101: Physics has nothing to do with visual perception. |

" If you click the enemy then the game aims at his foot X,Y coordinate for you. If the cursor isn't on the ground then please explain why when standing on the top of a hill or stair case and clicking below, your arrow hits the dirt? Why while standing at the bottom and clicking at the bottom does your arrow impact the hill? Why standing at the bottom clicking up does the arrow suddenly go over the hill? How does flight have nothing to do with physics? What game did you make so I know to avoid it.. I already hate COD for no bullet drop on sniping. Again, I rarely tell people to stop playing. That wasn't of malice but serious if not happy then its not going to change so move on. Of course you have depth perception, you just don't like being forced to use it. Sorry for any typos, on my cell phone right now Last edited by Sophung#2030 on Jan 30, 2013, 5:02:31 PM

" If you can show me a video of this flight happening I will retract my statement about the physics but I still think the targeting mechanic needs to be fixed. I enjoy this game and would like to see it improved. I think that while the current mechanic may be better after you get the hang of it the fact that when you click it does not go where you click is very jarring and confusing. If they intend to keep this mechanic as is then there should be a tooltip or tutorial somewhere that says "Don't shoot at what you are trying to hit, shoot at it's feet" |

" Video of the game physics following the ground or a YouTube link to an airplane flying around? Jk I don't have any screen capture software but I gave you enough information to replicate on your own. Or I can show you in game when I get home in about 1.5 hours. |
