I'm lvl 66 now, following this guide. It's been pretty sweet all the way, and I'm farming docks atm til I feel strong enough for maps, of which I have quite a few. I have to say though, I really don't know how to progress with my build node wise. I was thinking going for IR, then dropping blood magic and going BM gems instead to get a few auras, but that will have to wait until I have 6ls to support it (not happening anytime soon). So.. body and soul node perhaps? damn, I don't know. Feels like I want my end game gear and tailor my nodes after that, but I don't have that gear yet.

Sadly, I'm still using this Axe i found when fighting Kratyn in act2


Have some pity for me i am using a weapon that has half that damage :)

im in act 3 cruel and altough i ran into some difficulties, nothing that better gear cant solve i think. its my second char after glorious fail of a witch.

btw, imo best weapon for this build till like lvl 50 is


just awesome and totally synergic with that no crit node. also found some unique helm that gives +20% weapon damage, no crits but pitiful armor.

So I just tried to adapt this (excellent) build to axes. I removed all the mace-specific damage nodes and tried to put axe nodes instead, with minimal changes. This is what I came up with:

In the original build, you have:
5 nodes with +8% damage
1 node with +12% damage, +6% attack speed
1 node with +15% damage, 10% stun
1 node with +18% damage

TOTAL: +105% damage, 6% attack speed, 10% stun with 8 nodes


My axe adaptation has:
3 nodes with +8% damage
2 nodes with +4% damage, +2% attack speed
1 node with +4% damage, +8% accuracy (wasted)
1 node with +15% damage
1 node with +18% damage
2 extra nodes which were required (+10 STR, +30 DEX)

TOTAL: +69% damage, +4% attack speed, with 8 nodes plus 2 extra nodes


Of course you can get more axe-specific nodes, but then you'd use more than 8 nodes.

Axes have higher DPS, though. The best DPS in maces is 111.1 and in axes is 125.9. So let's do the math using the highest DPS items available (Vaal Axe and Imperial Maul):

Maces: 111.1 * 2.05 = 227.755
Axes: 125.9 * 1.69 = 212.771


Seems like maces win, right? NOT NECESSARILY! Axes have a higher base damage; this means that all the +x% physical damage mods are more beneficial in axes...

For example, let's suppose we found the exact same items as above, but your gear gives a total of +X%. Math now becomes:

Maces: 111.1 * (2.05 + X)
Axes: 125.9 * (1.69 + X)

If you do the math, you'll find that with +102% or above coming from bonuses (apart from passives), AXES WIN. I'm not taking into account skills (Cleave vs Ground Slam) or damage effectiveness, etc.


So now I ask: in the end game, how much is the typical +% damage you get from gear? If you typically can get more than 102%, then axes might be a better idea...
