Compare.

lol 3 hours is not much of a sample size for these kind of wildly random outcomes
Those lowlevel maps don't really have any real "use" anymore, especially as piety herself now has a rather high chance of dropping maps and explodes into a piller of loot. Most people will tend to do piety runs all day if it's about efficiency (high exp, extremely high amount of loot). It's also the same thing over and over again, so you get very efficient very easily. However, that can become quite boring pretty soon, so grinding some maps can be a nice distraction.
what's interesting is that piety is not nearly as hard as nearly all the map bosses are.

IME the map drops are no better than piety's, but you have a much higher chance of losing 10%.

catacomb runs are level 67, what's the point of a 66 map, and having to run away from the blacksmith and his chaos spewing zombies ?

Piety, and it's not even close. Unless you are a streamer that is running a full professional group of 76+ maps, stay away from them. Outside of professional lock-down groups, maps are bad for both exp and drops.

I am level 88 in Nemesis by purely doing SOLO Piety runs, and in that time I have found over 100ex worth of items(Soul Taker, 2x BoR, Aeg Aurora, etc). I can smash through fast as hell with my eyes closed. Maps with average players is slow as shit, so the exp is awful. Map bosses drop 20% the amount of items that Piety does, so it's not even close.

There is no point at which maps are more beneficial to the average player. Again, if you're in a group running 76+ maps with perma lock(like freeze mine), multi Purity Aura runner, crazy dps, and a max iiq Culler, then I would say to do the maps.

Run Piety and use the vendor recipe on all 66 and 67 maps. Piety drops more loot and gives more exp than any blue 66/67 map. Add to that she has a roughly 50% chance to drop a map. Finally Piety can be done super efficiently, 6 times or more an hour.

Piety combined with lvl 68 and above maps is the way to go.

Keep PoE2 Difficult.
