Offensive Skills not defaulting to Attack when OOM [SOLVED]
Hi guys. Well, cut to the point quick here. D2 sorc lover like no other, and after having my fair share of rangers in this game, i decided to step out of the box, and try my hand at this games Witch class. Within 5 levels, i wont do it, had to quit.
It is absolutely rediculous, that as a ranger i can go OOM, and Default attack will automaticly kick in regardless of the fact that im still using my Skill, and yet the witch, i go OOM casting Freezing Pulse, and she stands there like an idiot. So basicly, i MUST waste a slot on the bar to accomodate Default Attack. This issue, has literally left me bitter, and biased against casters in this game, and there is no way in hell i will play one until this is resolved. I have never , EVER, played a single ARPG, that wouldnt default to regular attack when you OOM (not that i remember anyways, and if there was, im sure it was over a decade ago), provided your within range / sight of the target. This literally just turned me off of every skill that functions like this, and it appears theres quite a few. Im not one to just complain about anything, and if anyone else feels this is trivial, well each to their own i suppose, but to me, this is not trivial, this is a major serious flaw by design. Flawed enough that im done with casters, i will stick with ranger. For the love of ARPGs, please fix this. Cheers. GGG - Why you no? Last edited by JoannaDark#6252 on Jan 15, 2013, 8:25:43 PM

So when a witch using daggers or a staff stops casting and runs into the mobpile arms swinging, that's okay?
Or if you run out of mana for your ice nova you should... do what exactly? |

Take a deep breath man, it's alright. You look terribly fussed over this design oversight. I've noticed it too, and yeah it is annoying.
Keep in mind that if your witch is welding a slow weapon, that default attack might be much slower than your spell. But still, for what it's worth, its better than standing still and doin' nothin', so: +1 for auto-attacking when out of mana, even with spells |

" Yup it is , thats what shift is for. :P As for ice nova , i would expect this behaviour. I do not expect this behaviour on frontal assualt skills. GGG - Why you no? Last edited by JoannaDark#6252 on Jan 15, 2013, 1:23:37 PM

As someone that played Witch a lot I agree that some things not going to default attack is troubling, but theres also the staves and daggers issue that was mentioned earlier.
Of course, if you're using anything other than Power Siphon, your default attack is doing awful damage and is actually causing you more problems by making it so that you can't move while that attack is going off - at least in my opinion. If you're having an issue with just having enough mana for a couple casts then you barely don't have enough regen to cast that third spell (or your cast speed is too fast) then that's kinda on you. Unfortunately, the fixes aren't exactly easy or good for you, having to delevel clarity or something like that. So eh, kinda mixed on this, and there's the staves/daggers issue so I understand why it is like it is right now. |

" This isnt really an issue. As i stated above, it should indeed still default to attack. Its up to you to hold the shift button if you dont want to go charging into combat. It worked well in D2, and almost every DClone i can think of. How it should be is that offensive skills default to attack when OOM, and (generally) defensive skills such as Ice Nova should just stop casting. Anyways, i still love this game , but i will not play a witch cause this design trait just destroys the fluidity for me personally. And im sure over time i will discover other non ranger related skills that function like this as well, thus leaving me pretty much sticking to the trusty ranger :D Cheers. GGG - Why you no? I have to strongly disagree with this. Generally the default (wand) attack is so slow (and inaccurate) that I almost died a few times when I accidentally clicked on an enemy when I wanted to move. If I had to face this every time I ran out of mana casting an offensive spell that would be ridiculous.
Also defaulting to an attack which scales with attack speed and accuracy on a caster which stacks cast speed and doesn't need to invest into accuracy at all makes no sense to me. It won't help you at all, only slow you down and get you killed. |

" The one line that mattered to me is this... Defaulting to an attack and having a chance to do damage vs standing in place like an idiot wont help you? As i said , each to their own, but for me , its a game ender. I wont touch a caster if this is how the skills / attacks interact with each other. GGG - Why you no?

The issue is that it's going to have to work one way or another, and the majority will probably perfer the way it is now.
Overall with my reaction time (though I have like a .22-ish, at least last I checked, and again that was in an FPS setting) I'll end up doing more DPS than if I were to hit my default attack by going OOM anyways. |

" Sort of ... but not quite. If certain skills had the ability to fall back to default, it would be perfect in my opinion. Things like ice nova are traditionally more defensive, and are the kind of skills i would expect to just stop, and leave you standing in place. But skills like freezing pulse, are exactly where i would expect it to attempt to enter default attack. I agree, that most times, you will pop a mana flask, and start firing away again, but theres always that case where your OOM, out of flasks, and down to one monster, with a sliver of life left. I like to take my chances. Not throw up a portal and run to town, and I most definitely do not want to have to blow a skill slot on the Default Attack skill. At any rate, i suspect theres alot of people for both sides of the arguement (well i dunno if its even an arguement, seems pretty civil :P), after all, its totaly a personal choice. For me, its just not gonna cut it. Thanks for replies guys, even if your against it :D Cheers. GGG - Why you no? Last edited by JoannaDark#6252 on Jan 15, 2013, 3:05:20 PM
