Australian Server

Hi guys, long time no see.

My housemate and I are avid players of POE, and I've been trying to run it by my housemate what sort of costs would be involved setting up a server down under.

Were there cost-based reasons for not hosting here?
I understand a decent blade server can cost upwards of 10k, plus whatever backup/storage and support costs as well as a business line to the backbone.

Wondering what you guys think.

There's a Singapore server, is that not close enough?
It is better for people in NZ to go to the US server than the Singapore server. If there was one based in Aus it would likely be better for Australasia.

It has been stated that it is 100x more expensive to house servers in NZ or Aus then most other places in the world so it likely won't happen.

The singapore gateway was put in place so that there is a happy medium of cost/usability for SEA players such as myself. Personally I find I get a much lower ping to the Singapore gateway than the US one but it all depends on your isp and routing. As far as play-ability goes 200ms ping (what I average to the singapore gateway) is playable with little to no issues.
Perhaps if the game goes viral and demand is high enough GGG may invest in an AU/ZN gateway. However data costs (As I am sure almost any Aussie are aware) are very high here in Australia and I cannot see this any time soon.
Another thing to remember is that the 'servers' are all hosted together and we just connect to high speed gateways, so there will be little if any benefit from an Aussie gateway for POE until some smarty pants finds a way to make light travel faster.

for Singapore i get 15 ms ping :D while 200ms for US server
It all depends on your ISP in NZ/aus. Where I am right now I get 180-220 to SEA, 150-200 to USW in games. At my old flat I got 160-180 to USW, 500-700 to SEA. Some of the people I play DotA 2 with can't play on the SEA servers at all because they get 400+, while others of them get under 40ms.

No, we still get 200-300 ping. Its playable but not much of an improvement over the US servers. Im speaking of my personal experiance.

Singapore gateway: 400-600ping
US gateway: 280-450ping

This is how my mornings go:

>Load up d3, check AH, quit.

>Load up poe, massive lag just moving items around in my inventory, quit.

You can't play with 300+ ping, and from what I've been reading the majority of people from Australia struggle. I see people complain when their ping jumps above 100 and yet my ping has never been below 300...We always get the short straw when it comes to servers; literally every time.
Being from NZ myself I know what bad ping is like and how it can ruin a game.

POE is very playable with 100 - 300ms ping.

Unless any of you can offer a cheap option for a server then it is economically unviable.
