Here's what I really hate about this game

So yesterday I hit cruel barracks on Nemesis.

Before heading to Solaris I'd figure I'd pick up the Docks portal first. So I enter the docks and the first thing I see is one of the scariest rares I've encountered. Voidbeast with Extra Damage, Multiple Projectiles, massive ES aura and Bringer of Bones. Can't melee it, I'll melt in seconds and it's hard taking it on from range because there's always skeletons in between.

Thought about reloading the zone. Thought about picking up my Arctic Armour gem. Then thought, fuck it. We're doing this man-mode. So I spend around 5 minutes in what really was an awesome and interesting fight downing the thing. Several times I didn't manage to damage it long enough and it got all of it's huge ES back, other times I got too close and nearly died. But eventually I won. I killed the beast. Great fight. You know what it drops?

Two whites.

Fine, shit happens. Bad RNG. We'll go on. So I descend into Solaris and face off against the Voltaic Seal first. Not nearly as interesting a fight but it's a mini-boss right? Should give me a chance at at least something. Know what it drops?

Three whites.

Well... Shit... My luck ain't good is it?

I then proceed to the next few rooms and eventually break a pot. Know what drops?

A Regal Orb.

And see, that's the part I hate. It's not that I'm not getting drops. I am. A Regal is pretty amazing loot for any run. What I hate is that great stuff like this doesn't result from great encounters where I take risks. It results from completely random things that have absolutely no bearing whatsoever with what I'm actually doing. There's this complete disconnect between risk and reward. Take big risks, get no reward. Take no risks, get a huge reward.

And yeah... I know. It's RNG. But this is like rolling what you thought to be a d20 and it coming up with -58. Someone put that -58 on that die. Just like someone programmed in the possibility of hugely challenging rares and mini-bosses to not even drop a single magic item whilst pots can drop some of the most valuable stuff.

So I have to ask, do we really need that -58 on our d20? Do pots really need to be able to drop the best of loot, even if it's a minuscule chance? Do rares and mini-bosses really need a chance, no matter how small, to drop not even a single magic item?

I'd still break every pot if they just had a chance of wisdom scrolls or portal scrolls and nothing else.

Always running short on those damn things.

EDIT: Hell, I'd probably break the lil bastards if they only dropped Scroll Fragments.

the complete randomness of drops that you hate is one of the reasons i love this game. never knowing what the next pot might yield is what keeps me going
my sentiments exactly, playing since January.

but every time I complain about it - I get treated as a nut.

"you got an Exalt/other good orb/above-average unique, man!"

yeah but it was from a barrel. I got nothing from killing an insane rare/tough boss/pack of champs.

people think that if they got RNG-lucky, the system is fine.
it's not.

Random is nice, but can be annoying.

In cruel, killing Kole. It is not exactly safe, but I expect to manage it. He drops blues.

Finding an exile in the Library or Archives, drops a whole load of blues and nothing of value beyond the rather trivial (low orbs and superior items).

Between those two, clearing gardens. I drop into library to get the WP before clearing the rest of the garden and heading to the Scepter to get that WP. There, sitting all by itself, dropped by a normal mob or some urn-ish thing. My first ever Eternal Orb (after level 70-64-54-55-54).

Or on another char quite some time ago. In the cruel caverns before Merveil. My summoner flips a rock and finds:

Or my physical cleaving duellist in merciless Fellshrine still area progressing.

Finding good loot is even more fun finding it on the character that will use it, doing normal area progression and not "farming" (I never grind Fellshrine).

But doing a predictably hard/risky fight and not even getting a yellow is not so fun.

dat axe.
so good for Spectral Throwing.

I think you have a point OP, although I do still like randomness.

Twice recently I came across an exile that was pretty difficult. I could never make myself leave an exile even if the right would slow me down or kill me so I whittled him down until I got the kill and was rewarded with all blues.

It just doesn't feel right.

I make sure to passive my thrower 2h, so that he will never use that axe :) I guess I will find a new build for that duelist, though.

In game progress, I don't trade, and am a bit in a limbo where I miss some jewelry/armor of almost as good quality as that axe. Life and resists, and chaos resist among them...

Time to burn some alchs on jewelry, or something. And any mob or barrel can drop a rare, and that rare could be amazing. That is a good thing about this game.

I would not mind if the rares were not a bit more rare, but at the same time guaranteed not to be all bad. There are some requirements for a weapon/armor to be somewhat useful.

The rare item range could move from "crap to epic" to become "mediocre to epic". Compensate by tilting them towards mediocre, and make them drop 1/3rd as often or something. But that would probably hurt their stash sales. That could change me from IDing rares when picked up, rather than in town sorting the bag, though.

Killed Cruel General yesterday, 5 whites and one Blue

like come on really?

The same day leveling in city of sarn, two GCP from white mobs.

Rares, and unique mobs seriously need a drop buff
