Final Boss review - Nemesis normal
Warning, there are spoilers in this thread!
I'm a casual HC player (one that doesn't race to top of ladder but takes his time trying to be safe) currently running a Spectral Throw Scion (-how surprising, eh?) in Nemesis league. I never really farmed any area for the sake of farming for Items or XP. This way I managed to reach level 39, ~1200hp, 39% damage reduction, ~75 allres, ~270dps by the end of act3. So I consider myself lucky with the drops since I never had to trade for items. Fight description:
Spoiler
I felt really tanky and confident until I reached The Sceptre of God. Monsters there are scary enough not to pull multiple groups of them at once. I was careful so it wasn't much problem. Then came the boss fight: I never spoiled myself before arriving to Dominus. So there was I without knowing what to expect. Fortunately if you are careful enough you can inspect the boss-room and all it contains before triggering the fight. I gathered that there were 3 adds to Dominus -one of each elements: A guy doing Fire damage, another one with cold, and a girl with lightning. I checked resists: @75 - I said OK. Shouldn't be a problem. I was wrong and I pulled them all at once - almost died were it not for a quick "Logout" upon realisation. Don't try to take them on all at once! There's a ramp leading up to the bossroom. Try using it to separate adds from eachother. 250 dps is good enough to quickly dispatch them one-by-one. After you kill these guys there will come another 2 or 3 similar minibosses. They are not harder than the previous ones. Except one of them is a titty-shooter. When you finish the miniboss phase then comes Dominus... Dominus phase #1: This phase he's in humanoid form casting spells of every kind, mostly Lightning ones. Also some low-hp monsters keep spawning from his machine (the one you can see in lower levels of Sceptre of God). It is important to be ready-to-move at all times whether to dodge his aimed lightning missiles or to move out of Chilling Totems' range. Also you mustn't be too close to him because of a charge-up ability which is an AoE similar to Shock Nova. THis one deals around 700 damage @75 lightning resistance. Despite all these pesky abilities I didn't have too much trouble dealing with this phase. Remember to hit him once in a while or else his ES will regenerate! Dominus phase #2 ("Logout || Town Portal phase"): This is his last phase. Just after you think you defeated him he revives as a monster saying "This world is an illusion." I think this phase is very difficult. By difficult I mean it's hard to be ready if it's your first attempt. Also there's a lot of particles going on. Maybe the most GPU-bashing part of the whole game. He has a few fancy moves: He can grab you with his Demon Hand coming from underground and place you someplace else. Titty-shooters and whipmonsters are spawning by great numbers. As a Spectral Thrower you'll have a hard time because you can't kill them if you want to finish the boss quickly. And believe me, you want to kill him fast. Otherwise you will run out of flasks... Flasks have a very important role in this phase. By the time I figured this out I relogged around 4 times. The screen turns bloody for a reason. It indicates that you are taking BLEED damage. You can see your bleeding stack count in the upper left corner of your screen. After there's a sufficient amount of the stacks on you the boss will press an "I-WIN-Button" and start DOT-ing your life. This is when you have to pop one of your "REMOVE BLEEDING" flasks. In case you haven't downed the boss after a few sips from your flasks you may want to consider making a TOWN PORTAL and leave the area until it's safe to do. Otherwise you have to "Log the f*** out" as I did a few times more. Hint: Turn up your AUDIO volume to hear a distinguishable sound indicating the time when you should use your flask. If all goes well the boss in this phase will eventually die. I think I stop describing it any further and go on to my opinion about the fight: GGG, you f**-in' nailed it! Haven't had a bossfight like this since I don't know... Vanilla WoW 40man raids or Titan Quest Hades boss. No, these examples were a cakewalk compared to Dominus. You guys top it all! Pros:
Spoiler
-Challenging -Epic scenery -Requires attention -Requires good positioning -No "Vaal smash"-like instadeath moves" Cons:
Spoiler
-HC unfriendly -Confusing abilities at first sight (what do the ground effects do?! Should I avoid stepping on them?) -Gaming rig recommended Conclusion:
Spoiler
I think it's the best bossfight ever in an ARPG. It will surprise you, it will thrill you and amaze you. On the other hand, I think it's designed to RIP everyone at their first few attempts which reminds me of an other game's difficulty-spike boss-mods at their release state. If I was to change things a bit I would increase the time intervals between bleed effects and their damage-ramping speed so people have more time to react without chosing the Logout option. Of course I will not QQ if they keep it this way, cause I survived :) Last edited by NorbTheOne#1240 on Oct 24, 2013, 3:14:36 PM

I was impressed with the boss fight.
The blood rain almost killed me two times before I just said "wtf this can't be this powerful without some non-TP tactic to avoid it." When the blood rain starts,

a magical bubble appears around Dominus, and it is a safe zone from the bleeding rain. The tradeoff is you have to facetank Dominus for a while, but it isn't anywhere near as bad as being out in the rain.

Yeah the bleeding gets a lot of people. No one seems to realise it would be safer next to the giant demon.
From what I can tell, when he says DIE IN AWE or simply DIE he's cursing you with an effect that turns all the miscreations on the screen into crazy ivan's who'll kill you real fast. The LIGHT OF A GOD or whatever it is he says move where he spawns chilling totems seems to deal less or no damage depending on how many totems are there when he does it. I could be wrong, maybe it is like a shock nova. Either way on merci at 75% res it managed to clear out around 3000 health. It's basically a vaal smash that can be avoided by paying attention or GTFO as soon as you notice a totem pentagram. so glad I read this thread. just killed him in normal and had way way more trouble than expecting as I'm meant to be just about facing him in cruel
that damage had to be avoidable but I was so angry at my melting hp that I couldn't think clearly! | |
nice guide (ive already killed him in standard anyway) but
" is reason why i avoid hc league in this game (will play nemesis just to get flasks and trasnfer them to standard)because there is almost nothing hardcore when 'logout' is commonly used as a mitigation plan.. |

" Don't derail the thread; I actually enjoyed reading it. This thread is not hardcore versus softcore. |

The fight is epic.
Tho i must admit, being on a non-hc league i kinda zerged him to death since i have Cast on Death + Portal gem (MEGA LUCKY DROP). At least it's better to test everything and prepare for nemesis, and i would advise anyone to try the fight on a non-hc league first, it's really challenging. " I was able to finish the fight first try without logging out, though some of my party members didn't. I think it would have lost a lot of the excitement without the HC risk considering it's a new boss with crazy shit I still don't really understand after killing it. For me at least. the floor particularly impressed me
compared to a screen a dirt and a few rocks in act 1... |

Awesome fight! I didn't feel so much adrenaline from a computer game for long time. It was really a tough and intensive meeting. He finally killed my char with that blood rain (which I didn't know how to avoid at that time) but I will remake and take revenge! :)
Congrats GGG! Please don't nerf Dominus if people start moaning he's too hard. He is intended to be hard and if the char is properly prepared he is certainly doable (portal scrolls your friend). Last edited by Kokoro#6389 on Oct 24, 2013, 4:12:03 PM
