Patch did not work for me either. Still states contacting server and stays there. The connection times out and stops trying to connect.

Same here. I've got my unlock code (as I've moved since I last played), but I'm not getting any sort of popup or anything to put it into. Other than that, it doesn't get past contacting server.

Got this from the steam forums:
1. download the installer and install it (point to a location easy to find as desktop)
2. when the game starts to allocate disk space, close it.
3. go until the steam folder steamapps \ common \ Path of Exile, and copy the file Content.ggpk (about 4.6GB) to the new installation. and turn the game shortcut left by the installer, it will download about 24mbs
4. Short after the update, run the game, login, and ask for a release code, use it to complete the release.
close the game and then play normally through steam.
Giving it a try. Will let you know.

...The thing is the installer wont let you installed unless previous verison of steam gets deleted...even after deletion of steam version it still spits out the message saying will not install because previous version exists.
Edit; apparently there was a sneaky file that was hidden that was blocking this found file trying the fix...
Edit: just got the work around to fix (thumbs up)

It worked for me, I copied over the .ggpk file and had the game unlocked when i logged in through the client. Even with the new patch that came out that disabled the unlock code for steam if you received one before the patch and were unable to use it you have to use it by doing this work around. Every Thing is working now. Thanks for the info !
