Anybody else enjoy primitive survival?
" hahaha that game looks like a great way to waste 5mins. definitely not worth buying nor the space on hard-drive, but randomly murdering a ton of wild animals with an onslaught of weapons for no other reason but to quench your blood-lust?!?! also fishing :) |

Failed a hand drill attempt again today. I already know of a couple improvements that can be implemented for next attempt, but the hands are going to need a day or 2 to heal. If my next attempt is also a failure on the attempt after that i will resort to thumb loops. I don't want to cheat with thumb loops just yet; i can tell it's close.

" Part of it was sorta learning as you went... I was with 2 people to start off, then did some alone time (super hard at first,) then got back together with 2 leaders and 3 other noobs, then solo again (much easier by this time.) Highlights were prolly eating the fresh blueberries and apples... and towards the end our group actually made a simple bow, made an arrow, and attached an obsidian arrow head to it, and shot a deer for dinner. Also catching crayfish... sleeping on purple moss fields... heat lightning... bear vs. porcupine fight... Least favorite things... the huge hurricane that got trapped in the basin and caused massive flooding and ridiculous winds. caused us to have to run up the mountain to avoid being washed away... one of the worst nights ever. I didn't hike the trail... I stayed around the maryland/wv/v borders I believe... totally off any semblance of a trail most of the time. ^ so cool, and what did you do for shelter?
Update / shameless self congrats: Made my first hand drill fire today :) didn't even have to resort to thumb loops. Long story short I used my prized yukka stalk as a hearth-board rather than a red cedar picket fence board. Better materials to compensate for my lack of skill/strength :) This is far from the end though; I plan to continue improving myself with the arts of primitive survival! |

We got one of those blue tarps, which also served as a backpack when you rolled it up. There is also an 'art of rolling' that you MUST master else it's MUCH harder to travel and you will be dumping crap everywhere as you go. Losing stuff on the trail can spell disaster. I also carried at least 2 days of dry tinder, my collection of rope making reeds, and a tiny bit of extra food I found along the way.
Anyway back to shelters... Originally on the first day I just wrapped myself up with it on the ground :P On the next couple days I tried to make one of those tents you stereotypically see by draping it over a branch or clothesline style thing with the 4 edges pinned down... yeah that doesn't really work well :P Eventually I learned to attach one corner to a tree and then put ROCKS on the 3 corners. This does a couple important things... 1 side open so you don't get rain and a breeze coming through... animals are less likely to go in for the stuff you store by your feet... and the rocks keep the integrity of your shelter in tact even in heavy wind. If you don't rock it, heavy winds during a rain will make you an unhappy camper. If you have account problems please Email Support

ahh cool, tarp shelter :) what lead up to you making such a life changing decision to go on this adventure? Forgive me for saying so, but it sounds as though you weren't totally prepared for it at the start. Also using your shelter as a backpack? GENIUS!! I've never heard of that before.
Oh, and a question about forum rules; is it ok to post youtube videos? I'm going to record my next hand-drill fire and thought it would be neat to post here, but wanted to check first to know if this is allowed or not. Anyone else feel free to share your experiences of hiking or adventure with us!! |
