Game is too easy? Not complex enough.

It hasn't been advertised as a "Hardcore Gamers Game", it's been REVIEWED as a "Hardcore ARPG with an emphasis on choices that have meaning", which I think it has been quite successful at so far. People need to stop bringing their expectations into the game and just enjoy it for what it is, a place to smack shit around and see how far they can bend the skill tree to do odd things.

@ghostcub, here are some quotes from the Kotaku article the other day
It's designed for "hardcore" players. "We're pretty hardcore gamers... Although we've tried hard to make it approachable for new gamers, it's designed to make the hardcore gamers feel special." "If the community gets bored and goes elsewhere, then that's all our money wasted." Ontopic I would just like to say that while the skill tree is quite intimidating when you 1st open it on further inspection its not quite as complicated as it may appear. On the general level of difficulty on the game its fair to say that the res patch made mid game a little more challenging (unless you have the gear ofc) but overall I personally wouldn't call the game (or any other arpg for that matter) hard. Arpg's afaic are fairly mindless, don't require skill and only require a little imagination as to what type of chara you wanna build. It's not rocket science but i'm not sure it was ever sposed to be. I personally always sigh when I hear terms like "hardcore gamer" or even "carebare/casual", they are totally arbitrary terms & IMO serve literally no purpose other than to make jerks feel somehow superior in forum posts. There is nothing hardcore about playing games & there is relatively little in POE that you could call hardcore other than Hardcore mode. EDIT: And even Hardcore mode doesn't wipe your chara after you die..."hardcore"? Last edited by lethal_papercut#5270 on Oct 24, 2012, 11:41:35 AM

" I really have no idea what you expected here. What ARPG's do you think are hardcore? This game is tuned pretty well for difficulty IMO. Did you not want to grind gear? Grinding for gear is kinda what they game are all about.... Standard Forever

ARPG (syn):
-hack n' slash -point n' kill -click-fest -gear grinding game comes with the territory. |

I have to agree with OP. Every encounter is always the same, run 'n gun or just bash the 2 keys that you use to kill everything with.

I hate to be that guy, but...
Exactly how far along into PoE are we, to those who are most vehemently complaining about the game being too easy? On my Marauder with Resolute Technique, Blood Magic, loads of armor and health nodes, and a few resistance nodes thrown in with, of course, as many extra endurance charges as I can fit as well, the game is ridiculously easy. On my lvl 70 or whatever summoner who is, unfortunately, in legacy now, the game is simple. But then I branch out for wild build ideas, which is my favorite part about PoE. Like my dual-wielding maces duelist with almost no HP... Yet with single digit deaths. Or a lightning-focused shadow I made who can still rip through maps with the "Monsters have 75% Lightning Resistance" thanks to careful skill and support gem choices. The challenge is what you make it. For Hardcore ARPG players, I think the meaning of "Hardcore game" is something like "What am I able to do, and can the game allow me to do it?" What this topic complains about is stuff that is an integral part of the ARPG. Of course there's going to be a gear grind. Of course there's going to be loads of easy enemies to kill. The challenge (for me, anyway) is doing so without a cookie-cutter build. And getting to a point where it's a fast-paced killing spree spread across the island of Wraeclast. *salivates profusely* "In a state of physical balance and security, power, intellectual as well as physical, would be out of place."

These seem to be complaints that are broadly applicable to essentially any ARPG ever made rather than specific flaws of the game relative to its competitors. ARPGs are strange fish in that they combine very limited and simplistic gameplay with extreme repetitiveness and often wilfully inconvenient peripheral features with regards to loot, difficulty selection and so on, and yet inexplicably remain compulsively playable to many people almost in spite of themselves.

By the way, to those saying that it's how Arpg are supposed to be : that is completely fucking wrong.
ARPG stands for Action RPG. It's a RPG that puts emphasis on action. That's it. Action Doesn't mean being mindless and only collecting loot that gently drops on the floor, like freaking flowers in a Barbie Game. LOOT IS COOL. The problem is that right now, It's all there is to the game. No challenge, No skills, no Strategy, no tactics, not even reflex, no initiative. Mindless button smashing in a predetermined pattern. People call it difficult when they have to smash their button a little bit faster (always the same pattern) and pay more attention to their life/mana Bar. That's not what I would difficult, skill heavy. This makes it highly similar to a crop collection/farming game called farm-ville. Except that it has a dark soundtrack and gritty environment to make it feel hardcore. |
