Pure Summoner Build
So when starting the witch summoner what was your main attack skill(s) that you used to kill mobs? You know since you have to kill a monster before you can raise a zombie. I tried doing fireball and firestorm, but it seems soooo weak (even when I used the skill node buffs). I had to kite Brutus for like 5 minutes. I haven't had to do that with any other build.
I also heard not to use ice skills since if you freeze an enemy and it shatters there is no body to raise. I need to start my witch necro build again since I messed up on my skill tree and she's almost useless, but I'm just not sure what skill gems to use to kill mobs. IGN: DrunkBarbarian / SupernalScion

I was using fireball and firetrap until act 2. You don't get skeletons until after you kill Brutus (quest reward is summon skellies) and Merveil is such a pita to try and use skeletons since she can destroy them as fast as you cast them.
So for her I just made sure I had 2 potions to dispel freezing (1 mana and 1 health) and just stood there blasting her with fireball until I ran out of flasks, then used a portal to refill them and went right back at it, making sure to drop a portal before engaging her. Merveil on normal was the hardest fight through all difficulties. And yeah the mobs do shatter if they are killed while frozen, but usually there are so many mobs to raise from it shouldn't be a huge issue, or none that I encountered. " Hmm, I've been using fireball and it just does so little damage (even with the "fire damage" nodes), and it's casting time is really slow. Freezing pulse seems better but even then it takes quite a bit to kill anything. But then maybe the first act is just gonna be a struggle in general to get through. So first off i'd like to say, i love this pure summoner build. I just hit level 50 in hardcore and I don't think i've ever gotten below 90% hp with this build. I was even lucky enough to snag a pair of "Bones of Ullr" for free from someone!
I feel like i'm at a point where my minions do so much damage and i can freely spam them (almost) without stopping. Saying that I really don't see a need to go into the Curse talents at the top of the tree. But I just don't know where else to go! There's a lot of increased cast speed nodes, max mana, energy shield nodes close by. It's just hard to choose >< IGN: EruptionII Looking for good wander gear, 5L-6S, or 6L armor. Make sure you have plenty of HP or ES if you are going for the CI build and with the CI build make sure you have ES regen nodes as well.

About the skill you used early, I did the same as Sickman, and started with the fireball/firestorm skills. I added frost nova and Spark when I had them, and now, I only use those two. The only problem is that you need to be close, but that's not the point here.
I thought I was going to burn my computer the first time I fought Merveil : I couldn't even do 2 spells without being killed. So I died a lot, and somehow managed to kill her with Firestorm. I blocked her with skeletons in the bridge thing, and I tried to spam skeletons and firestrom (my pot were empty really fast but it kinda worked finally, and I managed to do that only for her last quarter of life). The 2nd part was a lot easier, spamming frost nova or firestorm on the minions, and raising zombies with their bodies. Btw, I find that the specters are so useful in act 2. There's so much ranged monsters (archers, skeletons mages, the snakes thingys) that you can turn into specters, it's so strong. In the pyramid, the chamber of sins, and the church (if I remember well), you can do 7 skeletons which us spark, fireball or an ice ball, it's so useful :D |

I like to use the big gorillas just outside of town in act 2 also, they do a haste buff (I think that's what it is).
Too bad minions do not carry over between load screens. On my Shadow Bow Summoner that I am trying out in HC, I ground up a couple of extra levels before facing Merveil so I had a little bigger health pool and use basically the same tactic. I use poison arrow as my main attack and the chaos damage on it bypasses the energy shield so I didn't have to burn through it to knock health off. " I just don't think this would be useful. The minions don't live long enough to benefit that much from IAS. The whole point of their existence is to be a moving wall of explosions. Honestly we need to figure out if the zombie explosion is actually Fire damage and see if fire passives boost their explosion damage. That would be the biggest DPS upgrade. IGN: EruptionII
