Although auras can be cast and the gems removed the reduced mana pool largely makes up for it I think, especially with clarity - that thing devours mana. To make up for this players need to expand their mana pool to use the other skills often enough which dilutes the build from the main pathway in most cases.
In the same way it can be said it's an abuse to portal back to town to refill your diamond flasks, but that costs you a portal everytime and isn't that beneficial. D1 - PvM D2 - PvM/PvP D3 - MvM (Money vs Monster)
