Monster agro when in Party

Make sure your tank character deals damage to enemies to keep their attention. Many of them will switch to other party members if he's not able to keep them distracted.

Pray tell, how do you do that? agro is mostly random.

Right, so stop trying.
What's the point of that post? I've explained how aggro works; it's not random at all.

If someone wants to be creative and make a functional tank character, that should be encouraged. This game is all about creative and challenging builds, after all.

I've only partied up once, that was to help someone kill Kaitlyn.

There was I, the Templar tank, the DWing Duelist, and a bow Ranger.
I had aggro initially, but it soon became clear that there was no way I was gonna be able to keep it.

I used Enduring Cry, but that didn't seem to do much, she went around stabbing anyone she saw fit.

Not that it mattered, could've killed her solo probably, as could the duelist, but the point about the aggro remains.

It seems really, really random.

Actually everything you said is not only correct but confirms it is random.
That the mob targets someone because they did damage, but might switch targets at anytime shows they have a rule table, but it's still random when they change targets.
Rules like is player poisoned? high chance the mob will switch to that player to put additional stacks on him. Did player deal damage? may or may not switch to that player.

There is no "tank" in ARPG's and frankly I want to pull my hair out when people use the term.
Being a damage soaker doesn't somehow make mobs pay more attention to you. They are just as likely to attack the melee as the ranged. There is no "threat" multiplier, or anything of the sort.

Because you can't. There is no tank. This isn't an MMO ffs.

No, it's an ORPG with a coop-element.

Which means people will create their characters to fill certain roles.

Personally I love being able to soak damage, which is why I'm at 75% res and punching up my armor, block rate, and ES.

Player a character like that, I'll naturally also do what I can to make sure I am the one taking the most hits when in a party.
That only makes sense.

Which is also why I have Enduring Cry on my bars. To keep aggro as much as I can.

Get over it :P

Again, you confuse play style with game play....there is no role involving keeping agro. Just because your character is suited for taking hits, doesn't suddenly morph the game into another genre, and give mobs a threat table or you a threat muliplier. Agro is something that is checked constantly. There is no threat table.
Get over it? Get over what? Idiots that mistake a ARPG for an MMORPG? Um....ok?
If you play ARPG's to fill the role of tank, as if it was a god damn MMORPG, you're doing it wrong.
But hey lemme know when there is a threat table, and a threat multiplier on skills. They I'll be wrong, and you right.

Tanking is going to be difficult in this game, because there are no mechanics designed specifically for it. PoE isn't meant to have party roles like those found in MMO's and similar games. You don't have your tank, healer, and dps; you just have a bunch of different builds. Some creative players have come up with effective tank characters and support characters, though.

thank you, this very much so answered my question about mechanics. whether or not we are going to do a 'tanking' char /PLAY STYLE we shall see, but with the explanation of agro mechanics we can now make an informed/educated choice.

just from an initial guess, it will be no - but probably will have the melee focus a bit more on survival and range more on dmg MORE THAN the 'standard' builds that already do that -> as we are going to Party party party!

I would agree with whiteboy88 though. When playing, i feel the mobs tends to target more often then not, the weakest defense player in the party. As for what is defense, i think its the evasive built with the least DR/ES/hp.
Or it could be just the player with the least hp.

But no doubt, it doesnt feel like random. Hits on the mobs and within-range give you the agro.
For those who disagree, have you tried just doing nothing while your party-mate got that agro?

No, it doesn't. There is only 1 random aspect, and that is whether or not the target is changed upon taking damage. What that target would be isn't random, nor is any other decision in the process.

Then kindly don't read threads dealing with such topics. This player is trying to be creative to find ways to better enjoy the game with friends. I don't see a problem with that. If a player wants to make a character that uses 7 different auras and Conduit to share charges as a support character, there's nothing wrong with that, either. There's no reason to rant about the game genre and how it is or isn't something else when the desired build can, in fact, exist. Others have successfully made tanks in the past, although they're rather rare.

Which is why the thread was created and the questions were answered, along with suggestions for achieving the desired effect.
