Manual multilogging is fine, but any form of automated multiboxing is botting and therefore not fine.
Feb 2013 - twitch.tv/destructoid - multilogging okay; 3rd party programs still not okay

Destructoid: Is multiboxing allowed? Is that an issue in games? I've seen a lot of people doing that with WoW and other games, is that something people try to avoid?
Chris Wilson: Our current stance on multiboxing is you're welcome to run multiple clients on the same machine, but you should be playing each one, and if you're using tools to proxy your input between them and stuff like that, then that's an unfair advantage. So if it's exactly the same as walking between six computers and you move the mouse at each one and you control the character, that's no problem at all. But as soon as you're running cheating programs to make it so you're effectively running one guy with the power of six, then that's a problem.
Botting is a real problem. Here are some links.

Numerous technical details. Last post is 05 Apr 2013 where he announces live testing for this weekend.

Path of Exile is a relatively difficult game to multibox. For one, there is no auto-follow/assist/aim. Lack of movement keys removes the possibility of formations. The characters don't stack, but rather bump into each other like psycho billiard balls. Another issue is the different movement speed of each character, forcing you into using 5 of the same class (unless you figure out a perfect balance between the classes' movement speed or something). There is a big problem with the characters spreading shortly after moving. Spread too far, and it can be a certain death sentence.
20 Feb 2013 to present - Exile Minion - MMOMinion team announces development of PoE bot. Much less details than BlizzHackers. Last post breaks long silence to confirm development is still alive.

04 Jan 2013 - Path of Exile bot (macroscript) proof of concept - This seems to be a working bot that kills small numbers of enemies right after entering Fellshrine from the Church Dungeon, then logs out and repeats the cycle. In the video it only scans for uniques, but I imagine could easily have been redesigned since then to scan for currency.
12 Mar 2013 - (one week dev challenge) Path of Exile pixel based bot - Claiming the bot won't go public (unless bots otherwise infest PoE first), shows bot following coastline, opening chests, killing Hillock, accessing stash, trading with Nessa, and using identification scrolls
I believe I know how to find if someone is botting, type /Whois and their name and it will say if they are online and what they are doing or their general location in the game as well as char level.
I've noticed some strange characters and when I type /whois with their name it will say they exist but are not online while I may ask them a question.
They also msg me or random players for price quotes on things i've noticed.
