Are melee really that bad off?

I have tried several times to play a Templar, Marauder, and a Duelist using only melee only to quit and go back to my Ranger or my Witch. I just feel like Im having my teeth and nails pulled at the same time. Do melees get better at higher levels or right now do they actually need some serious buffs? Im just trying to figure out if Im just bad or melee builds really do need to be looked at. I just dont get that same experience playing a melee when I watch this:

They are much more gear dependent than their ranged counterparts. They are also much more limited in their passive choices due to needing a much higher percentage of overall nodes going to defensive statistics imho. It is possible to be pretty effective though with 15k+ armor / 5k+ life, 80%+ resist all and 7 endurance charges. Hopefully some of the new support gems and other changes in future patches will spice things up a bit for melee.
So basically if I was hoping to play a ground slam Marauder like a D3 HoTA Barb and just faceroll through high level maps with no effort, thats not going to happen?

lol. you are not going to faceroll through high level maps with no effort on ANY character. This aint D3. You can get characters to the point where it feels like faceroll, but if you let your guard down you will die.

Yea I have only been playing for almost 2 weeks and still trying to nail down something I like. I want to play melee but when ranged feels so much smoother and easier to play, and not to mention right now a lot more fun its hard to try and force yourself to grind out on something that might just make me rage quit.

I would be patient. Play a ranged for now, I think things will get spicier for melee over the next month for sure.

I was in the same boat. I got bored when I hit 83 on my ranger. I proceeded to try several melee builds only to quit them all. It really is a completely different experience as melee. There is a huge learning curve on what you can, and cannot do as a melee. You need to build your passives very defensively and stockpile hp in order to be successful.

I almost gave up. But as I learned more and more about specific bosses and game mechanics, I decided to try my own build. Something that wasn't copy pasted from a guide. And while my build may not be the greatest or most effective, I have to say that it is the most fun I have had playing this game. The struggle, the learning, the fine tuning, and the overall pride of getting to endgame with something homemade.

It is a challenge, and very different from ranged. But it can be loads of fun. I can't even imagine how something like what I experienced with my mara would feel in hardcore. Reached level 80 today :)

melee is possible, but yes it is harder.

My experience:

6 level 70s(of all different classes, 3 being melee)

One lvl 83 Duelist Melee (my current top end)

My main 83 duelist is my favorite and is geared 10x better than the rest, but his survivability is much lower due to having to be in combat. I don't die often, but I also take my time a lot more vs other classes.

BTW. Those new support gems will do 0 to help melee classes for surviving imo.
Melee requires much more setup, through gear, managing charges, casting buffs and managing health vs damage taken through life leech gear and particularly strong flasks. The damage mitigation of armour doesn't exactly help.

They do very well with enough setup, but only solo. In groups, melee is and probably always will be fairly pointless.
