It's Hard

This is all true, but not at all obvious to people new to the game or even to many people who simply AoE'd their way through D2 a couple times. Recipe for people quitting before even getting into it.

+1. Lower Normal difficulty, go hog wild after.

No, this is how Normal should had been before too, the previous Cruel was actually Normal 2v. and not Cruel, so its now much more balanced than ever. If only you do not surrender you can see that.

Nah, dude. Us vets get it, but if you or I were just getting in to the game, there would be ragequits everywhere. I want more than anything for the game to be hard, but I also want it to be enjoyed by more than just the hardest of hardcore.

Ditto that.
After tweaking some skills being mentioned (flicker strike and such) there would be more happy times on going i am sure of that. But not by decreasing overall difficulty, if you know what i mean.
"This is too good for you, very powerful ! You want - You take"
i've encountered a rare that would regen faster than i would hit (it was a rare necro, see screenshot http://i.imgur.com/d3Epi.jpg).
it has a regen life, and allies regen life mod. I could get past the energy shield, but then i could cast non stop to it, it's life regened faster than i hit. It was with a lvl ~12 witch, with freezing pulse. What can i do? i'm using the standard skill, it's not like i could gear up at that lvl ... to get through i had to ctrl+click the lvl, and start again...
these kind of situations should be reserved to higher difficulties.

The new AI however is great imho, although the necros casting out screen are a bit annoying.

Difficulty is a bit too high in normal mode imho (i just reached act2).

Bring a friend, or leave it behind. With Freezing Pulse you can shatter the enemies he would raise anyway.

Some monster mod combinations work together better than others. You just happened to roll one of the more difficult-to-kill ones.
I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out.
Heard its twisted dreamed inanity
In a whisper, in a shout.
In the babbling cacophony
The refrains are all the same:
"[permutations of humanity]
are unworthy of the name!"

Were you trying to kill it when it was right next to you or at a distance? Freezing Pulse works best when you attack things that are close to you... If you like killing things at a distance with cold damage, use Ice Spear.
Personally I do want the game to be hard, I want to feel any mob can kill me if I run around head first into things. However the last patch didn t do that for me, what it did was to keep the game very easy most of the time and then create difficulty situations that became frustrating.
I believe the main concerns of most of us people complaining one way or another are more related to the very beginning of the game, not higher difficulty levels, and those special skills that in no way can be avoided. Flicker strike, Necro s summoning skills and Cold Snap.
Just about Cold Snap, being hit from off screen should not be part of the game, it doesn t add to the difficulty in a constructive way it only makes things very frustrating. It leaves you with the feeling there was nothing you could have done to avoid it and you have to accept that you died and replay the area again. I know about flasks with dispelling freeze effects and cold resistance items but honestly those don t help that much. Also it is part of the very beginning of the game exactly that you may or may not find those items before you get to those areas, and in such case you should still be able to go through them (imho). I believe it makes no sense to have to know in advance that you are going to encounter those mobs and you have to get those items no matter what (how do you expect a new player to know in advance?) meaning you either have to farm previous areas, buy from vendors, trade with people or craft if you are lucky. (Not including bosses, I feel the above is good for bosses).
Also imo this does not apply to higher difficulties in which you should already be prepared and geared up for the challenge ahead, because if you went through normal then now you DO know what to expect.
Another thing, some areas in act 1 are way harder than act 2, that doesn t feel right either, is like the difficulty progression was somehow reverted.
Going against the usual forum bravado I think normal is a little too hard. The necromancers really need to be toned down a bit. It's almost impossible to get to them with undead continually being resurrected, it just comes across as being very frustrating as apposed to fun. Not a great fan of that totem boss on the ledge either, I’d hate to have to take him down as melee.

All you are doing by setting this level of difficulty in normal is turning away a lot of people to the game. Yes the vocal minority of forum dwellers will tell you the difficulty is just fine but that's mainly just forum bragging which runs rampant in any game now days. The level of frustration that normal is generating is not healthy for the game at all.

This is in regards to normal only, I believe later difficulty levels should be just that, difficult, normal on the other hand should not be an exercise in frustration.
This is precisely what I was trying to say. Normal should be used to teach new players how to play their class. That's why I feel a steady difficulty increase rather than a rollercoaster would work better. At the moment, you're throwing new players into the game, expecting them to know what all the skills do and how their class performs. This is not the case.

I'm also laughing at everyone who says "To beat hailrake, just get cold resistance!" He's literally the first major quest of the game. Where would you like us players to get cold resist from? Shall we pull it out of our ass?

I saw one rare item throughout the entirety of act 1, and I even redid some areas for additional levels when I encountered a challenging area. And the item that dropped was one that I couldn't even use. You really can't use the excuse "well go gear up noob" anymore. At least not that early in the game.
