Botting and In-game spam

About maphacks, i think games will be entirely hosted on their servers, unlike D2. That is the case with HoN, and in 2 years i've never heard of any serious report about a maphack. As far as i heard, someone would need direct access to the servers in order to get a maphack working.

As for bots, i really don't know. Seems very hard to prevent people from botting. In my opinion, the best way to deal with it is to issue permanent bans to anyone caught, without any warning. An idea i had a while back was also to find a way to detect specific bots, run it for a week or so, then ban all the people caught. If you just disable a kind of bot, people will find a new one and won'T get banned. If you detect them and ban them, at least it has some effect. Also the game being F2P could be harmful when it comes to botting, cause people can alway make new accounts, or use alt accounts to bot on.

Just ban the I.P.
Bots are a particularly difficult thing to track these days. Especially in arpg's where by there very nature players are doing the same thing over and over again. As for banning the ip's, honestly very few people have static ones and they can be changed if you know what you're doing.

Really though, good luck to all the guys at Grinding Gear. The game will be 100 times better if you can keep the cheaters out but I know what a monumental task that is. Without tipping your hand it would be nice to hear the dev's perspective on this.

There are a few problems with IP bans. First, many people don't have static ip's (as far as i know, i'm not pro) and you cna easily get a new one (i think).

Also, it kinda cripples people who play from places like lan centers, school, job, or anywhere other people might have access to the same computer/ip. Banning ips might prevent some people to play at certain places, and banning all accounts related to a botting IP might get innocent people banned.

Don't get me wrong, i'm all in favor of anti-bot action, but we also have to keep in mind that such mesures must not cripple legit players.

Botting in Diablo II ruined the game for me. You would join a game and instantly your screen would be filled with spam about a website to buy items.

My hope is that nothing like this will happen to Path of Exile. Botters in WoW don't really effect me that much so I could care less, but Diablo II was the worst.

I know its a difficult task, but please for the love of God, keep the Botters/Dupers/Cheaters away.
With a proper setup with how the game runs through the client and server can help mitigate the bulk of these problems. I am not sure how GGG has it set up but i would hope that the mistakes of past games were learned from when creating the network infrastructure.

Would love to hear some more information on it.

Glad that there will not be a RMAH cause that well im not going into that....

Regardless there will be people who will try to cheat in some form or another, and it is partly the responsibility of a beta tester to help find the methods people may use to cheat and report them so they can be fixed. Mind you that is a double edged sword as one could not report it in hopes of taking it into release for an advantage.... Stares at others.....

For some people, changing their ip is as easy as typing in a few lines into command prompt.

bump for justice, i've seen many games ruined by bots, some kind of xtrap , gameguard or integrated protection system is always welcome and gm support too. This is f2p so we will have to see how it will go

Xtrap and GameGuard are both ridiculously easy to bypass. Granted, the newer versions do take a bit more creativity to circumvent but its nothing close to impossible. Basically systems like that are only in place as a deterrent. They'll stop script kiddies but nobody else...

As for bots and hackers there is no way to stop them. The best you can do is try to keep them to a minimum. My advice? Encrypt your packets and make sure that there aren't even seemingly trivial things stored in the client (such as movement speeds - which is one a lot of games like to leave in for some reason). Software like Xtrap and GameGuard can also serve as a deterrent but don't expect much more than that from them.

(bah gotta run so I got cut short will try to remember to come finish later)

Edit -------------------------------
Sorry about that. Anyway, I lost my train of thought so I'll just say that, while I realize GGG is quite a small company, I sincerely hope security isn't something that's going to get tossed on the back-burner until OB or release, as that might do irreversible harm to the community.

Xtrap and Gameguard aren't just easy, they are pointless to have around. They take up your processes and overall slow everything down. They need to add a lot of limits and make everything server-sided if they want to avoid all the hackers, botters are a different question though.

Sadly its pretty easily circumvented.

Agreed. There are a lot of legit users who have issues pertaining to Xtrap and GG sucking up system resources, causing crashes, etc. Sadly, simply making everything server-sided won't stop all the hacks, just a majority of them. But, as you can tell by my previous post, I obviously agree with your sentiment to make as much as possible server-sided (within reason of course).
as long as measures are taken against it, unlike all the diablo 2 spam
I really have hope, that PoE will be clean - no cheaters in his community. I saw many games ruined by bots(good example - Silkroad). And it is true that programs like GameGuard are useless.
