Path of Exile - My Take
I didn't exactly coin the term "diablo clone" with this article. It's been pretty widely held that games containing medieval combat, magic, the same overhead view and third-person style of control (where you attack and move by clicking all over the screen) is a diablo clone. Now, it happens to add a lot to the diablo-clone type of game... but it's more a diablo style game than it is... say... a elder scrolls type game.
I can make another review when I'm in my 80s (but that's going to be a while, I'm pretty casual), but honestly that's going to be a while, and the only section which is really going to change will be the gameplay one. The currency system will still be brilliant. The customization options will still be there (moreso even... as more sockets are added to items). I want to add something here, too. I have a number of friends who were into Diablo 2 back 5-10 years ago, and all of them who've tried PoE have been made as happy by this game as I have been. May be a niche market, but man if it doesn't deliver. My Shop - http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/524349

" Please, have patience until you're actually there, instead of predicting how your journey will shape up. I can tell you from personal experience that PoE is quite enjoyable and pretty balanced up until the 60s. So yeah. Get there first, deal with mapping, deal with the currency and time investment for maps (especially since you say you're a "casual", I expect you to have quite a few annoyances), deal with the lack of needed currency for rolling maps, deal with the layer above layer of grinding (you need to grind, to be able to grind content), deal with the lack of content efficient for your level (because the endgame is itemised, and RARE), deal with the full RNG casino slot machines "crafting", deal with the lack of self-found gear, deal with the trading system - forums and stuff, bumping your store, making auctions etc., deal with the mobs that will one-shot you even though you thought your build is just "fine" (and it was, for maybe 50-60 levels - but not any more), deal with the huge&sudden damage spikes, deal with the difficulty walls and the lack of balance (and a certain rumoured developer disregard for such things as balance), deal with the XP penalty, deal with desync deaths when you will lose a full day of gameplay (probably more in your case, since you say you're casual). Then, please revisit the review. Thanks. placeholder for creative sig Last edited by Undon3#5633 on Mar 17, 2013, 1:59:08 AM

" Races are pretty much the reason I keep playing PoE. In fact, I only started in open beta and I've never even gotten a character to merciless, default or otherwise. I just find the strategizing and skill to pull off a race build has a lot more replayability than grining PvE. The "pseudo PvP" feeling of racing makes it seem a lot more competitive. Sure there's still some tweaks needed (for example, race builds tend to be a lot more restrictive than late-mid "normal" game builds, and the selection of viable skills (and how much some skills need improvements) comes in to very sharp focus. Surviving and advancing with little to no resource/currency availability is pretty fun too, though sometimes randomly welping a character near the end of the race can be a bit harsh. Racing is a lot easier than some people make it out to be. Sure there's the supertwink-class of players who make it frustrating to an extent but getting ahead in a race is fairly easy, one big rule: Don't go to town more than ABSOLUTELY necessary. |

"Nice sum up and there is much more, So mainly the OP is simply describing the hopes I had for the game when I was starting until I saw that GGG simply tried to jump way to high and they fall short in every point of the game. BTW the game is really not hard at all, and calling it hardcore is like spitting on the word. The only way for the game to be hardcore is if you compare it to a korean grind-fest mmo... but then again it will fall short there because there is too little grind of that.
