Dying in Delve causing lost loot and progress
I'm posting this as a new thread, because the only threads that popped up when I searched for loss of loot items upon death in Delve, were old posts from 2018 that were closed to further replies, and honestly more confusing from the answers given.
Going through the Synthesis League I just started delving in Act 4 when it was unlocked for me. Every delve I have tried since the first intro one, I have died in. Every time I tried to go back to where I died and gather my loot, I would be put into a new instance instead which has no loot in it. What started as a normal Bug Report about "lost loot upon death while Delving" ended up as a bit of a rant because when you die in any other map in the game, you have the opportunity to go back because the instance is on a timer. I moved the rant portion to the 'Spoiler' tag to save overall space.
Spoiler
From what I've read in older posts is that this is working as intended. If it is, then I am sad to say that Delve will no longer be a part of my play.
All it accomplishes is a negative spiral, where delving deeper requires Azurite for Mine Upgrades and Flares, yet what limited amount of Azurite there is in shallower levels ends up being lost because once you die, you are revived 'outside' the instance, and trying to get back and recover items from the encounter become impossible as there is no way to get back to the same instance. That being said. I could care less about the items loss because hey, I died, it's part of the game. What I care about is that since the failed delves are considered "Complete", there is no way to redo the encounters for Azurite...which means that it will eventually get to the point where it will no longer be possible to delve at all, as the deeper you go, the more Azurite you need for flares and Darkness Resist upgrades, but whatever Azurite that was lost from that death, cannot be recovered. With Azurite as scarce as it is in the early delves anyway, and since there is no way to recoup the Azurite loss upon dying in an encounter, logic dictates there ends up becoming no point in spending time doing it at all. There's enough of a grind to begin with, with farming for gear and such to survive and clear higher levels in the Base Game and for each League...there 'should' be no point in adding more of a grind for separate gear, just to do 'One' part of a game that's been going strong for years. I get losing things upon death is part of the game...but at least balance things with Delve mechanics (more Azurite in nodes at shallower depths maybe) so as not to make it a "Limited" commodity that can only be experienced until the resources run out. As you suspected it's working as intended and it's like this by design. Note that progress won't register if you don't finish the run (died midway).
I feel your pain, really do... just recently lost a III azurite node when game froze during loot explosion and I died. |

" FYI tl;dr Delve is designed to test the metal. Delve is not mapping (Atlas) nor running through the Acts (levelling). Delve is specifically designed to be rewarding success only (you die, you lost). Which is very true to the heart of the early POE - hardcore ARPG. When Delve as league launched, it was even harder, because how flares worked, some mobs killed you with the lights out skill, etc. And Delve was character bound. Just Google some of the old content pre-launch and post-launch[1]. Everyone was excited about the idea about a 'dick measuring contest.' Delve Tips For Beginners: 1. early on, GO ONLY STRAIGHT DOWN with your sulphite, though the Azurite nodes to upgrade (A) the crawler, (B) the Flares (C) dynamite amount and radius. You can also go down through some jewellery nodes for some jewellery later for the Chaos Recipe (if you play SSF, or trade league - if you like the Chaos Recipe). 2. Only when you have the first 3-4 upgrades of each, especially the light radius and the resistance, you can try your first breakable wall. Venturing off the crawlers path without the upgrades is guaranteed death, especially for beginners. When you have your darkness resistance and light radius at your current delve depth at around 100% or more. You can try venturing sideways for breakable walls. The higher the res (% value) the easier. Same applies for flares. If your Azurite returns and thus upgrades can't keep up with the depth darkness (going into the red negative resistance). Go a couple of depth higher and sideways and collect there some easy Azurite and upgrade the crawler and flares. 3. Learn about the mobs skills and how to mitigate or not get hit at all. The on death ice explosion. Azurite the projectile explosion. Or some other nodes the sand storms, they do phys dmg. Example for the on death ice explosion ground effect, you need to mitigate that with cold res capped, antifreeze flask mod, or a class that is immune to elemental ailments, or an affix on an item that you cannot be frozen or chilled (eg Hrimnor's Resolve), or the flask less cold dmg taken - but that does not prevent you from being frozen. " This is what I'm talking about. There are only so many Azurite nodes in the beginning that losing any of it stalls and/or ends progression. I was doing this method (somewhat) already. I was dying trying to get the Azurite nodes, and all but one death was after killing all the node spawns (which tags the run as 'Complete'), and dying to multiple rare adds that followed me before I can pick up any Azurite that dropped. What I'm getting at, is that after a few cycles of this, there isn't enough Azurite to do any upgrades. The Delve League itself was fun and kind of easy, because it started from a level 1/level 2 character, and raised in difficulty as you leveled. Every Delve after inclusion into the base game starts in Act 4, and by that time if I don't have an instant-clear CC build, which 9 times out of 10 I won't unless I find and use someone else's builds, I get swamped just from keeping up with the cart, instead of being able to go at the same pace I was in the rest of the game. Like I said, I just won't be playing Delve on anymore Leagues. I don't have the knowledge or experience to make an effective build to survive it in the short time frame that the Leagues tend to run and more often than not, broke from trying to adapt gear just to survive leveling much less afford the mistakes I'm guaranteed to make when choosing gear from Trade. I appreciate the advice and it WILL help me in the future. It's just that until I get more experience with the game and start to know what I'm doing, there's no point for me to waste the time banging my head against Delve in anything but Standard where I have the time to work out the mechanics of it, instead of trying to rush while in a League. |

One "easy" way to combat this is to overlevel before engaging with Delve. It feels wrong at first but it will be much less frustrating until you can get decent upgrades.
Delve is more punishing than general maps after all (though imo low-mid depth delving does not need specific or OP builds). Those buggers hit hard and we can't exactly run away. |
