What's the Best Way to Cap Resistances after Beating Kitava in Act V?

Is my best bet to attempt to use trading to get gear that has high elemental & chaos resistance? Or can I get this type of gear through the vendor recipe system?

I'm a returning player & I have an Arc Witch character at lvl 59 with negative elemental & chaos resistances. I've never traded anything nor used in-game text chat - but I'm willing to learn.

I've been following Enki's Arc Witch guide here:

a bismuth flask of resistance. +55-65% of all resistances when active

nobody gives a fuck about chaos res - it isn't required and hardly ever useful. its definitely much more desired now-a-days, but still completely fine to run around with -60%

Thanks for this quick reply!

I'm concerned about maxing my resistances because my level 59 Arc Witch is constantly getting killed by trash mobs. I'm also losing XP after I die which makes progressing beyond the current level impossible.
For a short while, the purity auras can be useful until you are able to equip better gear. If you can afford the mana reservation, I mean.
obviously things are a lot harder to do if you do not trade - but trading should be fine, except you have to use browsers to do so.

anyway im sure there are guides to how to search for items and trade etc so check on that.

purity auras and the flask are just very quick temporary fixes until you can get gear in order

There are some nodes in Passive tree which give you elemental resistance, both a general (elemental) or specific (fire, lightning or cold). Chaos damage is actually important despite what other like to tell you here on forum and you should have high priority on elemental damage type that can increase damage when you have enough low health. Read up on ailments on PoE wiki as those are related to have much or fast you take damage.

Another issue which haven't been mention is that you also have to take into account for physical damage which only armour can reduce. Energy shield will take damage before health, but will not reduce damage from chaos damage and with life pool being as large as it is for most end game builds that also means that those player will not feel impact of chaos damage as much as when you are low on health (CI builds is another story as those are build around being low on health to trigger certain things in game).

As for utility flask. Make sure that you have mods on flask that actually A) have a high duration when you use it for defence B) that make it fast to recharge (use) again as fast as possible. Flasks weakness are that can't charge it on some enemies like Syndicate (mobs yes, bosses no) in particular when need to be mobile. There are also map mods where charge on flask are reduced or removed which make it even more important to not be to much depending on charges from flask. You have in The Pantheon a small God that give you charges for life flaks when you not been hit for duration.

Your first priority shouldn't be resistance as when you change gear you will loose that very fast and need to find gear that replace resistance on the same level. Go for high health and energy shield or armour as your main stat for gear. High health will help you to survive after all calculation have been done and even at full resistance you will need health as maxed resistance doesn't prevent you from getting damage, just reduce it a bit.

Make it to a routine to check maps mods (open overlay map and you should see main mods for map).

The real danger is from DoTs and ailment when we talk about elemental resistance as you can get shocked, ignited, chilled and frozen. Poison and chaos damage isn't as common, but they still exist and is important to have some mitigation against. With low health your chance to get shocked is much higher then with higher amount of life, so already here you have an effect of increasing your life before more lightning resistance.

Caustic ground can be really hard in avoiding while fighting and can drop your health very fast if you don't pay attention to your health bar dropping and where you are standing.

I had once defeated Syndicate members and started to interact with Jun when I suddenly see how my health bare is rapidly going down. This happens on my first maps doing T1 maps. Same with Synthesis Fragments in Nexus. You can be unlucky and get Memory Fragment with Shocking ground all over ground which can be really hard to avoid and also to visually see as it have rather subtle visual effects for where it is supposed to be on ground. Here enough health will help you to survive and to use flask in between (and combined with high enough life regen or leech to heal up again when you can hit enemies).

There are items that give you immunity for damaging ailments as ignite and other types of non-damaging ailments which can be useful to have in your stach tab (even of they aren't optimal for damage) until you need it for those kind of maps when you don't have enough resistance.

EDIT:

There are Divination Cards that you get through game that have life on gear. Those are magical in rarity, with rather good mods for life. Use those and craft what you need as those should show up often enough to help you to get other part of gear. I started to get those Div Cards around level 60-70. Run Labs and more easier content like Blood Aquaduct and you should get good enough gear with life (you might need to re-roll mods a couple of times to get better numbers).

First, thank you very much for taking the time to write this very nicely detailed & thoughtful reply to my question. I very much appreciate it.

- Passives in the skill tree: I'm closely following Enki's Arc Witch build & I don't want to stray away from this build at this time.

- Ailments in the POE wiki: I will read up on them & I believe that this is the link for it: https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Ailment

- Damage mitigation from physical, elemental, ailments, & chaos damage: Yes, I agree that armor will mitigate some incoming physical damage. However, I still have to be concerned over mitigating elemental, chaos, & ailment damage as quoted in the POE wiki here:
"
Elemental damage and damage over time are not mitigated by armour, because armour only mitigates physical damage from hits. Bleed is a damage over time debuff that is based on the initial physical hit, armour would reduce the initial hit but not the damage over time. However both the initial hit and the damage over time can be mitigated with other sources for example Basalt Flask or endurance charges because they don't only apply to hits.

Source: https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Armour

- Damage mitigation in Enki's Arc Witch build:
"
Mind over Matter: This is a Keystone which redirects 30% of all damage we take to our mana. We use the Eldritch Battery Keystone to protect our mana pool with energy shield, which allows us to reserve all mana while still keeping Mind over Matter functional. For this to properly work, we need roughly 43% of our Life pool as Energy Shield.

- Map mods: Are you referring to map modifiers as mentioned here?:
https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/List_of_map_mods

- Map overlay: How do I open the map overlay?

- Divination Cards: Are there any that I can get as a level 59 character that will grant me more life/health?

- Changing Gear in Order to Maximize Resistances & Life/Health: Would it not be advisable for me to get gear that both maximizes my resistances and also maximizes life/health?
Here is a list over rewards you can get from Divination Cards when you give them to Navali (she must be in your Hideout to offer you this service and it has its own line in interface for Navali; it not the normal sell window).

https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Divination_card#Rewards

As you can see there is several item that you can get and the most common is Humility which give you Tabula Rasa. Is a unique six linked with white sockets (can use every colour in socket). It doesn't have mods and can not be crafted with exception for become corrupted through use of Vaal Orb. Corrupted item can not be changed (crafted), so it a gamble to use Vaal Orb to get one mod added to this item and still keep it as Tabula Rasa item.

Life armour: The Carrion Crow

In perfect world you would have every mods to max, all resistance fully capped and more if possible, have chaos resist both a large ES and life that is large enough to take one shots. In reality you have to first get enough of base currency to be able to either buy items and craft them (change mods), if they aren't already maxed out on every useful mods or you need to find item while doing other things in game as loot and from that build up quality, rarity and mods. This can cost a lot of currencies as this process are random. Same for how to get up to six sockets and then link all six on an item (that is why Tabula Rasa is so popular).

The cost to get six linked socket at Craft Bench is 1500 Orb of Fusing, so it is rather costly to invest in an item while you levelling up and can expect that you rather soon will find another item that might be better.

Look at the end of Craft Bench wiki where you can see cost:
Crafting Bench.

Everything in this game is based on RNG and mods, meaning when you start on doing Atlas you will need to turn it onto a magic map (Orb of Transmutation or Orb of Chance - Chance can make item into magic or higher rarity). This is necessary if you want to progress on Atlas as you need kill a boss with magic rarity which adds mods to map. A white (normal) map have no mods, can have quality. You can change mods on magic maps with Alteration Orbs.

EDIT: I don't recall which where the default key bind for overlay map (maybe M?), but you should be able to find it where you set key binds in Options. You can move overlay map with arrow keys on screen.
