True meele tanking Merciless Vaal smash?

gh0un made an interesting video about what it takes to tank merciless vaal smash:

http://youtu.be/lT9bmgduV3U

some good info there, and the coolest accent ever

obviously map vaal would be a diff story
From that video above, you can estimate that Merciless Vaal does 5,000 fire and 5,000 physical damage with his smash.
It is possible to tank it three-four different ways:

- if you have massive HP (Kaom's Heart), and enfeeble
- massive armor (granite) + endurance charges, and enfeeble
- immortal call cast at the right time
- spell block (the smash is classified as a spell)

But all these are quite difficult to achieve, and are risky, because he can crit and deal more damage than you expect, or the curse might wear off at the wrong time.

And there is another way to tank Vaal that is more safe, easier to achieve in terms of gear, and more fun - not let him smash, smash him instead: http://youtu.be/tB565AwoWkE :)

That's pretty impressive, if done in hardcore.

Killing Vaal in melee is not hard at all if you just avoid the smash. Nothing else can hurt you significantly, melee or otherwise. The lightning shot deals around 3000-3500 pure lightning damage (reduced to easily tankable range with 75+ lightning resistance; it applies a shock ailment, but you only need to take the first shot), and falling rocks shouldn't be an issue in melee since you're never supposed to get that far out of the range for more than a second.

The easiest way to avoid the smash is to run behind Vaal, not away from him. Being at point-blank range on the opposite side of his body (or at least some 60 degree away from the shash line) is enough.
<Tyrfalger> Exactly, the next act is going outside Sarn and into those wheat fields (see the map) to become a farmer. Then we can spend our days endlessly farming. Wait a minute...

That's an interesting point; unfortunately the instinct for the vast majority of players, when Vaal raises his mace-hand, is to run away rather than into Vaal. Instincts are powerful forces.

I used to do that. But than me and another guy were fighting him and when he started to cast the smash, he ran away and i ran behind him. I died and he didnt. I think running behind him is logical but bcz of desync a lot more dangerous, u can never know where the excat location of the smash will be, so the farther away you are, the safer.
