Tencent Acquisition

Most unsettling, indeed.
I'm sitting here with my collection of PoE items on my desk, maps on the wall, the shirts I'm wearing, all as a result of massive support over the years.

I'll be honest, I'm feeling pretty silly right now.

you shouldn't. just add "sponsored by tencent" to all of them to feel better.

joking aside, a great experiment just finally failed on the current generation of gamers. there will be no independent, free to play, no pay to win games for a long time.

idealism is dead. you need to charge people for services, building on people's idealism doesn't reliably pay your bills.

a company may offer free to play elements for a certain time but needs paytowin to cross finance these goodies and will finally have to prioritise paytowin over free content.

we had 7 years of fun, i'm thankful for that because i know people in nz worked their asses off to make this happen.

I'm not saying they don't deserve it, I just hope they actually got a good deal out of this. Tencent know how to invest, they wouldn't have gotten near this acquisition had they not been convinced it would result in significant ROI.

We can't see into the books of GGG, so we simply won't know. I trust their judgement.

What every big company says before tearing the new one apart. I'm really surprised game developers don't know this already.

is that really in tencent's interest?

the worst thing that can happen is the closure of the world realm because it's not generating revenue and ggg developing solely for china.

given the uproar and calls to boycott the takeover that's a likely scenario.

I've said the same to people on our Discord, if PoE global fails, it'll be because Tencent pulls the plug and they will get all the blame, but how much of that choice came from this uproar and boycotting bullshit, if you'll excuse my language?

Cause and effect. If you want something not to happen, don't help it into existence.

With that said, I feel more strain on supporters now than ever before. It feels like the future of our beloved PoE is really in our hands now.

It's making me feel rather... uneasy. Especially because I have been supporting GGG, not just PoE. Until now, that is, as this is no longer possible.

what? supporters have just been shown the door. your (and mine, but ive stopping 'supporting' this company many years ago - i just buy product, not invest emotions) help is no longer needed

not it has been for years now - poe moved from focus-targeted game into casual all-invited game. small group of whales is nothing compared to 10k or 20k one-time buyers coming with each hype wave

not to mention that stash tabs, the so called 'ethical' non-p2w mtx are pretty much necessary if one want to enjoy his time. you can safely assume that players who get to maps - have already bought 6tabs so they have 'invested' 20 bucks

btw - all this boycot etc is a nice self-esteem experiment. most players do not even know that reddit exist, even smaller part of said group know about this boycot, and even smaller gives a damn.

no to mention that most consumers do not give a damn about 'moral' side of the story. they rate the product: is it good? cool. is it bad? not cool. and if poe remains as it is now - most players wont notice the difference

what will change is a) atmosphere at GGG (issue most of you seem to ignore) b) long-time supporters will open their eyes and most likely leave

I'm not going anywhere, actually. I still love the game and its developers didn't suddenly go up in smoke either.

So why should I?

It was an executive decision. Whether it was a solid or poor one remains to be seen. Chris is doing what he believes is best for his company and its project.

...I hope.

it likely depends on tencents offers to their new customers.

Anybody knows the popularity of PoE in china compared to D3 or Grim Dawn? I wonder what was the growth when they started to cooperate with Tencent.
I represent only myself, my own thought and believes. I am individual, not a representative of the community.
I am not speaking on behalf of someone else and I don't get offended by things that have nothing to do with me.

3.13 was the golden age.
About supporter packs, you people realise that Tencent will get 80% of profits only? After paying for servers, salaries, etc. Idk how much of revenue used to selfsustain, but even with 80% cut more than half of your money gonna stay in GGG's wallet, and even then growing popularity in China will force Tencent to reinvest them (and a lot more) back. Everything remains to see, no point to stop supporting now. Tencent usually changes things in China only, it is bigger market with different mentality, people there cannot just go play global realm and Tencent is not that stupid to not give a credit about different market. Chris most probably told them about how even stashtabs considered p2w by part of community and streamers, by inventing something like paid ressurect in HC or mtx with stats GGG will lose money and Tencent must understand that. I'd say that any changes which might happen will be in more distant future when Tencent will really understand company they are working with and their western customers.
