Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

Personally I'am a little scared that this will make game pay to win (Spatial backpack which doubles your inventory space), or worse shitty MTX gambling machine (Only this week buy this special Oreo mystery box for a 0,01% chance to get Oreo summon raging spirit, 0,01% chance to get Oreo portal effect and 99,98% chance to get Oreo brick hideout decoration). A quick google search on Tencent reveals some shady things, but I guess that is each on their own to decide. On the other side I glad that GGG now has money to make some really cool stuff (like celestial trap effect, that works like Gloom herald. Wink* wink* DO IT GGG make my memes come true) and hopefully make MTX more affordable, or just making some skills usable (looking at you magma orb). I really looking forward to future leagues and mostly 4.0 release. Time will tell if this decision was good.

I wouldn't worry until they decide to sell spring roll flask microtransactions with doubled effect, or release a Maraketh themed expansion right on the heels of Incursion. But I guess china numba wan is basically what most of reddit believe lies in the game's future, so I guess we can all contribute to the funeral and the feast at the wake after.

And the thing is, Pay-to-Win is not my biggest concern. I am sure you would have to be an absolute moron to destroy the game like that, so I don't think it will happen.

Instead, we will start seeing for-profit mentality of a corporation sink its teeth into PoE values because it is now their duty to make money for Tencent, so no more off-years, no more huge investment of time into developing new content, less customer support and improvements etc.

In addition, I expect banal, popular, mainstream ideas, themes and storylines to start coming through in the upcoming years.

This.

GGG tried bestiary league, and kind of failed for the most part, because people just want kill 1000 monsters in 0.1 seconds, and mashing buttons..

BUT im glad they did that league, it was an experiment, and it was great (i personally really liked it)

I think this kind of experimental thing will go away because now they absolutely 100% have to make sure the new league is liked by most of the players.

it's been a good run
see you in the next world

Conflicted. GGG deserved every penny I spent as they were a beacon of indie dev I wanted to see continue to flourish. Buying another 'supporter pack' would feel dirty at this point.

It won't because GGG will still get most of your money and it will cover all their expenses. It's just that Tencent will get the lion's share of the total profit, not the income.

I have a lot of thoughts around this announcement, so wanted to write them down to organise them:

1) 11 years of awesomeness deserves thanks. Thank you so much, you GGG champions.

2) Path of exile is currently the best game in existence. We know it, why wouldn't investors know it?

3) If GGG makes a lot of money, they have set the blueprint for dozens of similar games to follow suit. As a fan, I like this possibility. If you believe in market forces, you might see this as insurance that the game stays good, where currently there is not much competition.

3) 20 million sign ups and 2 million active users is a drop in the bucket of where digital entertainment is headed. The trend is that gaming and digital goods have outperformed movie and T.V studios (in gross value of the global market) for many years. Games are getting better, so people are choosing to spend more time on them. Almost all projections show the job market shrinking and leisure time, plus lifespan increasing. A game like path of exile could become the equivalent of an English Premier League (the soccer/football franchise supported across the world).

When I think of a future like this, I don't think about the money or the parent company. I think about a grandparent playing this game with their grandkids. Of schools using this game to to make learning fun, as happens regularly with minecraft. Of funny youtubers who currently have 15K viewers having 1.5 million viewers and becoming stars. Of POE tournaments held in stadiums, like League of legends currently is. Or Virtual Reality technology combining with games like this in a new form of exercise. I guess a 520 billion U.S.D. company is necessary for scenarios like this to be viable.

The whole point is losing your true, original values, constant development and improvement of the game based on community's and streamers' suggestions/feedback. I'd rather the game stayed true to their roots - if you expect players to grind for their gear and achievements in game, why DO YOU AS A COMPANY STRUGGLE TO GRIND IT OUT?

Who cares about the stagnant, boring League of Legends? Hollywood movies also make the most money by far worldwide, but are they the most authentic, real and inspiring? Do they teach you something positive about life? They are mind-melting brain-washing pieces of recycled garbage that people gobble up. You sound like you belong to that folk - Virtual Reality, Success based on the # of followers and the rest of it. I do not want that to happen to every single successful start-up developer who came from nothing. It is sad.
BTW, after this Announcement i think GGG need to turn off supporters packs, right? They don't need our support anymore! They got TONS of $$$, so why we still need to give them our money? To make they MORE rich? They floating in money and the will keep floating in them for next 100 years.

So yeah, please TURN OFF SUPPORTERS PACKS or RENAME it to DLC or VIP Access.
Aaron Ciccheli, a guy who made millions running Diablo and PoE RMT sites, owns a significant portion of GGG. How's that for a conflict of interest? 7.5% of your supporter pack money goes to this guy.
ewww Tencent one of the biggest P2W shit company out there lets see how long it takes until the try to interfere with the non china version

I hope you're renaming supporter packs (I won't be buying anymore after this anyway)

Dude are you for real? IT's AN 11 year old engine... do you have any idea how ENGINES are developed and implemented, you cant just replace it with a better one, you need to build an entirely new one from the ground up, including the systems around it, that costs "new game money". GGG are not a software company that develops game engines, it's a company that develop's games using a proprietary engine. You want newer shiny engine? 80$ a month wont cut it, it costs at least 100K$ per month. GGG spends at least 0.5 mil just for salaries you [Removed by Support].

NO NEED TO DEVELOP NEW ENGINE OMG... [Removed by Support].. GGG shows what they can't do - technical side, shit game engine, no real support center. For that 11 years what ppls enjoy crash windows they can(if they care) buy normal engine and make that game realy great. No one wants "shiny" new engine, we see that shiny shit like d3, like Mu Legend, like Lineage Eternal. That dark wierd looking game interest ppl not for graphics, it's a close to Diablo 2 atmosphere. It's fear and pain on the next screen. it's a challenge to survive. Who fked wants that shitty timer portals?

GGG stupid bitch erasy my post in feedbacks and suggestion and DONT GIVE FCKED ANSWER. so what u need to understand i respect thier job what they done by making gameplay of that game, that what they are not to try make more "popular" shit from the good game. But i absolutly disrespect how they communicate with his clients, i absolutly disrespect selling game rights and writings "we still rule and doesn't matter what we sold 80% company". It's stupid lie. If u defend them in that way fck u too.
