How about if you can equip the effects to the item slot instead of the gear, so if you switch helmets it'll come on the new one without you having to put it there, this way you would never lose them in your infinite stash.
Here's a TLDR version of the OP for the lazies.
Also, good suggestion. I see no reason why this shouldn't happen.
