Pyrocon's HC Ranger Build - Updated for 9.8

I tried it without iron reflexes and honestly I nearly shat my pants when I failed to dodge 2 quick attacks in a row and was at like 5% hp. I rather take the hit knowing I got 70% mitigation in effect than roll the dice and pray that I dodge it.

Don't forget to pick up "chance to resist status effects", though. My ranger (similar build - heavy on life, with Iron grip and Evasion>Armour conversion) died just minutes ago on Mericless Hailrake because of his abominable freeze. Repeatedly being frozen for 5 seconds with nary a chance to doge his five missiles... quite a rude awakening after breezing through everything up to that point.
12/12/12 - the day Germany decided boys are not quite human.
Great information thread by the way, but shouldn't this be in the Ranger forums?

Also, I'm using a Curse/DoT Ranger currently and absolutely loving it, you can find some videos of it at my link in my signature.

cheers.

For all the buildup at the beginning of your post I was kinda expecting to read about a clever HC melee build :/.

Agreed, his build wasn't special before 0.9.7, and sure isn't after. I also found it humorous that he died a few days after posting this "guide to being as awesome as me" in 0.9.6

Everyone dies to the lag monster sooner or later. I agree, the build wasn't special, it's just that people were complaining about the lack of options to get to Chaos in HC without having gear, so I provided one.

As to 9.7, yes, this build is sorely in need of an update. I haven't touched the game since 9.7 so I'm certainly not the best person for the job, but I might remedy that in the next few days.
I used your guide Pyrocon just modified to 0.9.7 am 63 now and doing 4.5k DPS with full frenzy charges and running blood rage. Of course I have high life leech and life gain on hit with 1700Hps. Chaos is pretty fast clearings with this kind of DPS.

I stuck with it and have always wanted to thank you.

can you post your skill tree?
I dropped Iron Reflexes and sticking to evasion. In Chaos, the only mobs that can hurt me are gold-named mobs and the ghost guys that do Flicker Strike; otherwise if I get hit, it's not an issue.

Out of combat: 6856 evasion rating -62% chance to evade
In combat: 7647 evasion rating -64% chance to evade (with 6 Frenzy charges, Blood Rage and the 4% increased evasion rating passive off the Frenzy node.

Ok. After 8 Orbs of Regret, I have decided that Iron Reflexes is just not for my style of game play. I cannot remember the armor value, but it ended up being 75% mitigation once I put the passive points into Iron Reflexes.

(This is in no way scientific):
Basically, before, a zombie in Chaos would swing at me and maybe hit me 1 out of 2-3 times he swung, let's say he would take me down to 65% life if his swing landed. The 1-2 misses would give me enough time to move away from any mob that got too close.

With Iron Reflexes, the zombie hit me every swing and maybe take out 20% of my life, sure that is less damage but, how often do you just have one mob hitting you?

With Blood Rage eating up life, Blood Magic also eating up more life through use of skills, and mobs damaging you too, I personally feel that evade is better for my game play. I'd rather heal up from a random damage spike than pop life potions a whole fight.
Now that I've spent some time with 9.8, I'll be revising the original post heavily at some point in the next week. I'd do it sooner, but I'll be out of town for four days.
Looking forward to your revision ...

Trying a ranger for the first time atm, having great fun.

Revision complete (mostly). No new skill tree link, but if I find some beer in the fridge, I might be arsed to work on that a bit later tonight. :)
