CI & GR useless without VP?

What I understand so far:
- life-leech is capped at 20% max-life/second.
- while using CI life-leech uses max-life as if the player would not have taken CI to determine the leech-cap
- GR converts leeched life to ES (max leech is still capped based on max-life)

I'm wondering if the combination of CI & GR is useless without VP? Life nodes and life mods on gear are useless for CI users but without these the leech cap is very low as well.

My intension was to try a dual-claw melee shadow. Instead of focusing on life (this becomes quite boring) I'd like to focus my defense on Evasion/ES nodes, CI and GR, resistances, avoid elemental status nodes and of course life- & mana-leech. But after the above realizations this doesn't sound like a good/viable idea anymore at least not without spending a lot of points to get VP.
It would be much more viable if GR (in combination with CI only) would use max-ES to cap life-leech or better yet, in general use whatever is higher, max-life or max-ES.

What are your thoughts? Am I missing something? Any hints are appreciated.

Thanks!
anyone?
pretty sure it uses es to determine the max es/s

and plus - dafuq is VP? seriously ive been playing this game since before open beta and i dont have a clue about some of these abbreviations. when will people realise that some characters dont use the same skills and nodes on a regular basis as yours does? it may not be meta-game for half the community so why abbreviate?
VP is Vaal Pact.
Sometimes you can take the game out of the garage but you can't take the garage out of the game.

W..T..F.

ur right. vaal pact is very far away and no useful nodes between that and increase in buffs/es increase nodes above it. i would prefer to couple gr with zealots oath+vitality+increase buff nodes+blood rage+etherial knives.

do you have a source that can confirm this information? I didn't find anything regarding this topic.

Sorry about that. I was pretty sure that people that might now the answer know about CI (Chaos Inoculation), GR (Ghost Reaver) and VP (Vaal Pact). For the future I will keep your advice in mind.

And they do. Ofc they do.

To answer that question. For me yes. GR would be useless without VP. Though i have a pretty "dumb" build. Melee 2-hander with CI. Without VP i would never have enough leech to maintain my ES. I would be prety much dead. VP was the last keystone which i took and it made my leech so much better. Though i have no idea what would work the best with your build.

Anyways... Float's suggtestion with Zealot's Oath is not that bad either. Just received a post in an other thread about a build which uses that method. Zealot's Oath + HP regen passives + Vitality Aura + HP for killing blows iirc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLBeEomNBMk

Thanks prh

This guy has some pretty amazing builds. I already had a look at his build of the week a "crit witch".

I think this video kind of hints that life-leech with GR could be based on max-ES. He doesn't have VP and it looks like he is leeching way more than 400 (20% of 2000 life) ES per second. But I would still not go as far as call it confirmed.
