Where do jewels go, exactly?

I was always wondering... On our skilltree, we can place jewels to boost our characters. However, where do these jewels actually go? Do they get implanted into our characters' bodies like gemlings or something? Or are they more like extra pieces of jewelry worn on our characters' clothes maybe?

You need to step away from the computer and realize that this is just a game. We're not actually controlling the lives of tiny people in an alternate reality.
