I guess i could google it, but im scared.

Sure, no problem.

//The following assumes that you don't treat the animation medium per se as something childish.

It's a very well-written show (not even by "cartoons targeted at young girls" standards, which are reportedly extremely low; just well-written) with 3-dimensional, flawed, but still very likable main characters and pretty good and catchy music/songs (with minor exceptions). It also has a ton of references that are targeted at grown-ups (much like "Animaniacs" used to back in the day); e.g. one of the episodes is an obvious homage to Agatha Christie + partially Arthur Conan Doyle, which also has references to three different cinema genres (silent movies, spy movies and ninja movies/anime). The raised topics are often very non-kids-friendly (one of the episodes is a mashup of dystopian images discussing matters of equality/individuality balance and danger of totalitarian cults). Also, it's often absolutely hilarious, both in terms of dialogue and visual comedy.

Frankly, if I wasn't told that this series is "targeted at young girls and or pre-teens", the only way I could have guessed is by slightly more pink in the frame than I'm used to.

I won't buy it but still +1. I want to see sparkling stuff in town instead of the dumb demon-animation-spam that annoys everyone.

Also: Fluttershy is the best!

That's the trend these days -- these 'cartoons' are not targeted at the kids, but the parents who have kids. There are more adult in-jokes and 80s references in the higher tier of 'cartoon' than ever before. We Gen Xers grew up watching cartoons, moreso than any generation before us, and we haven't stopped. For whatever reason, the marketing brains at Hasbro (especially Hasbro, but not exclusively) realised that the best way to get their shit out there was to create layered cartoons/animations that both parents and kids could enjoy.

And it worked spectacularly well. Do not for a second think that the reincarnation of My Little Pony was aimed exclusively at young girls and pre-teens. Hasbro aren't stupid; they know Sailor Moon is a thing. I've never watched it but as I said, there's at least one fan in the GGG staff. I HAVE watched things like Phineas and Ferb, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Gravity Falls, and while they're all ostensibly cartoons aimed at kids, they're made with the parents in mind and it shows. I'd argue the former two probably have *more* for the adults than the kids, in fact.

So it's not as simple as saying 'this show is targeted at this demographic' anymore. Especially not now that toymakers and merch sellers have finally figured out the best way to get parents to buy the stuff is to get the parents into it too.

None of this excuses the hardcore bronies, however. NONE OF IT. That shit is just creepy. Then again, hardcore fans of anything are always a little...off the rails. Try not to let any rabid fanbase be the deciding factor for your own judgment of something.

Basically, this.

Even more generally: there is a latest trend of increasing population of "kidults" — people that are economically self-sufficient, but tend to have hobbies that used to be associated with younger audiences; this has created an ongoing trend in entertainment in general, not only in animation, to cater to adult audiences. There is a lot of materials on that.

If you think of it, spending a significant portion of spare time killing pixels to get other pixels in your stash is not an activity that would be expected from an otherwise adult person, say, 50 years ago.
