1 example of why PoE is very 'new player' UNfriendly
Game isn't old player friendly too. I can't stand playing it more than 2 weeks in a row and I'm often disgusted enough to wait next league to go back in again LOL. ATM I have no issues with the game mechanics, but my first char had his dark times(and it's an understatement), kep t his gear on for the remainder. (best item isn't worth a single alch, was melee and gone up to lvl85 looting NOTHING)

It's far from original, but a simple "journal" or however-you-want-to-call-it could probably be of use. Some sense of unknown is good, I think. There could be some base entries for the absolute basics, and then new entries as you come across new gameplay elements. It could be used for some other things of interest, like keeping note of vendor recipes you have found.
For what it's worth, I don't think the example in OP is the kind of thing that should be put in there, and I don't think it's a good example of, really, anything. |

" Best response Game is very knowledge intensive but, I don't see that changing. Gameplay help forum is a great place to ask questions. |

For the longest time I avoided Culling Strike (nevermind why). Look at a level 1 Culling Strike support gem. I don't give a rat's ass what PoE wiki says, the gem says "3% increased attack speed. 3% increased cast speed. Kills enemies on 10% life or less when hit by supported skill". Nothing about increased damage.
Now, here's what a level 7 Culling Strike gem says "12% increased damage. Kills enemies on 10% life or less when hit by supported skill". Nothing about attack speed or cast speed. Go figure. If I had known about increased damage I would have linked this support gem long ago. Argh! If I knew how to link stuff in a post I would prove it to you. (I have followed the instructions and I can't get it to work). |

As a newish player, I completely disagree that PoE is unfriendly to newbies. The mechanics that are not clearly explained to you, are things that you really do not need to know until you want to min-max your character and get the most out of your currency. But min-maxing is in no way required to play any part of this game, except maybe the hardest content. What you need to know though is clearly spelled out, and I really believe that players who are struggling with this part of the game, are just not paying attention. That is their fault, not PoE's.

Another thread about how hard POE is. Gamers these days have really hard time to learn or adapt even in Hacknslash games. Blizzard realised that gamers are so dumbed down and now they creating games for vegetables. No builds, no skills, even items drop for only your class.
#1 -> Dude you have websites about everything in POE. Every problem I encountered in game(for example why CWDT no longer activates enduring cry) I googled in 1 min. POE is ok for new players. Some guy here mentioned list of unfriendly things: "--Strongboxes --Shrines --Master missions --Master crafting --Rogue Exiles --Bloodline mods --Jewels --Currency items --Sockets --Corrupted zones --Vaal skills --Race leagues --HC league, SC league, Standard league " --HC league, SC league, Standard league HC league - You have only one life SC league - you have tons of respawns SO HARD --Strongboxes Well... I click on strongbox and it respawned tons of mobs. Cool. How to indentify it? Scrolls? Maybe I will google it. SO HARD --Shrines Why they are so fast, crap. 10 seconds later... weeee im so fast!!:D SO HARD --Master missions I have new objective, thats cool. SO HARD --Master crafting This is more complicated for newbies but lets try to learn about it or read on google. Little HARD? --Rogue Exiles Another mob who drops loot. COOL SO HARD --Bloodline mods you see most of the effects during fight. You really need tutorial for every fuc... mob?! SO HARD etc etc. No wonder that assasins creed is one of the best action games nowadays and walking dead one of the best adventure games(game about clicking one button) |

You say you have (GMP+Firetrap+Increased Burning Damage+Freezing Pulse) on a 4L crown. Not sure where the Cast-on-Death plays in here but the answer to why you can't use FP directly is that you have it linked to a trap and as such you throw the trap and when something steps on it then the FP is triggered. You can't have both unless you have a second FP gem that is not trap or otherwise trigger gem linked such as CoD (cast on death), CoDT (cast on damage taken), CWS (cast when stunned) etc. You should have noticed that if you bring up the skills icons to bind one to a key that the Freezing Pulse is greyed out meaning you can't cast it yourself.
Example, I'm running a dual fire totem build and thus I can cast no skills directly, every skill I want to use must be linked to a mine, trap, or other trigger gem. So I have a 4L crown: so for every trap that gets stepped on the Firestorm will rain down. Even if I ran without Ancestral Bond and had skill casting capability I'd still not be able to use my Firestorm directly as it's linked to the trap and only stepping on a trap can set it off. PoE has always been very short on adequate documentation. The PoE Wiki and other PoE information sites try to fill in the missing info but GGG has never created any decent documentation for PoE. Probably due to being a small indie game company so there are no human resources available to devote to that task. "You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration. The perfect solution to fix Trade Chat: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2247070 |

I never found the game "unfriendly" when I started.
I still dont know much but I hit lvl 86 in the flashback league not following specific guides. Its very much possible. The gamepedia is awsome - ZiggyD's videos are also very helpfull. If i could understand POE's complexity within one day or if i wouldnt die so much i wouldnt have that much motivation to learn and play the game Last edited by Im2sl0w#6409 on Aug 11, 2015, 4:31:29 PM

You mean people are going to have to learn the mechanics of a game?
What an atrocity. |

POE's learning curve is very steep.
The game is not going to hold your hand after killing Hillock. You have to learn to read everything on the wiki or forums. |
