14159 armor is NOT 58% phys reduction. Its not even close on big hits. more like 10%
And fortify doesn't even stack with it.

thats 91%
Actually, none of this stacks, just armor, end charges, soul of steel and chaos golem.

Quick graph (with 2.0 formula) about how much %physical reduction you will get from x armour for y dmg, for any level
You'll see that for 50% reduction you need 10time more armour than the hit.

I believe, that since armor is reducing damage flat (I know there are complicated calculations behind, but its limit reduction is 1 damage per 12 armour, so it behaves like flat reduction at the top difficulty), so armor rating formally does NOTHING towards 90% phys resist limit, and tooltip phys reduction generally misleads players.
The only things that should be considered towards % phys resist are clear % phys damage conversions and reductions from items, passives, skills and charges, which from the other side are not all shown in the tooltip. With the increase of difficulty level impact of armor to phys damage mitigation diminishes to its flat limit.
Nonetheless armor still may give significant flat phys reduction (like -500 to -1500) so it shouldn't be overlooked completely.

The new numbers in the armour mitigation formula are 10 instead of 12 now.
For years i searched for deep truths. A thousand revelations. At the very edge...the ability to think itself dissolves away.Thinking in human language is the problem. Any separation from 'the whole truth' is incomplete. My incomplete concepts may add to your 'whole truth', accept it or think about it

First of all you dont wanna do it with Armor because you cant.
Way to do it is
Lightning coil 22.5% with 75% lightning resists
Arctic Armor 15%
Fortify 20%
Taste of hate 22.5% with 75% Cold resits
4 endurance charges 16%
thats 91%
When you hit taste of hate, you actually have 85% cold res, so you can count 25.5% instead of 22.5%.

In 2.0 version there was improvement to armour effectiveness (taken from patch notes)
"
Armour now protects you more than it did before (approximately 18% more protection).
So most of the graphs/calculations in this thread are outdated/inacurrate.

Yes, it was already noted.

And that 18% estimate was very generous, it will come close to working that much better only with very strong hits versus very little armor, which isn't something you want as an armor user.
It's a good advice to take as little as possible at face value, it's very rarely an outright lie but it often isn't the truth you think you hear. Armor does protect you better as a mechanic, however with the damage boost monsters got, it actually works worse than before, overall. I also suspect average monster damage table didn't get updated so the estimate is more inaccurate than ever.
People are funny, you know, armor is suddenly awesome, and back when it was stronger it was supposedly crap.

Most people are idiots and have no idea what they are taking about. All the armor-hype clearly proves this.

Armour has always been good. The graph I posted shows it clearly, and the numbers are easy to achieve if you are realisticly investing into armor. It's just that some players complain that "with 4k armor I get hit for so hard, can't do maps, blablabla". It is like any other defense, you need to invest in it to make it good. I do not understand why they keep complaning about a defense they did not invested in.

And how much you propose to invest into it? Mandatory IR? Take entire lower half of the tree? Buy mirror class gear? Obligatory Grace+Determination? You would've be surprised how much it takes to be 14k unflacked if you ever tried.
And armor wasn't 'always' good. It was good up to so,e point in original closed beta, patch 0.9.qq iirc when it was changed to what we have now. Current armor is never good, because it never gives you protection from damage spikes thus rendering main point of it as defense useless.
