Lol no, the 290 does not outclass the 970, much lol.

And I thought he was getting a new mobo.

If he was then an i5+970 already puts him over his budget of 500-600.

Missed the x on the card. The r9 290x performs better at anything over 1080p. Regardless of that though both of those cards are going to max any current gen game right now at 1080p anyways.

Both are way out of his price range anyways though.

Yea but no but:

GTX 970 only 165 watts power used too and MASSIVE overclock headroom.

People asking if they should buy prebuilt are not OCing there GPU
Yea but no but!

GTX 970 / 980 are still on their first drivers. Expect much more performance as the drivers mature.

Get ALL the GTX 970s!

The Nvidia/ATI debate has always been settled by one thing for me, drivers.
HAIL SATAN!
GTX 970 is also DX12 ready, and you can get ones with 3x display port outputs which is the future!

And like half the power usage of a 290 (I think).

On budget, a new i3 should suit better than the i5, at ~150€? (+board). For gaming, I'd at least calculate 150€ for the gpu too, and then look for the surrounding components. obligation: 64bit system, 8GB ram, suiting power supply. HDD can be upgraded later, other parts reused from actual system.

That difference with a ssd or a regular one... huge. It's the difference between me still loading and the guy with the ssd already half way across the map.
