Feel sorry for the new generation of gamers...

Simplicity is not a positive attribute for a game designed for adults. Indeed it is as opposite as it can be.

The core of solid games imo is:
freedom
empowerment
high complexity
For years i searched for deep truths. A thousand revelations. At the very edge...the ability to think itself dissolves away.Thinking in human language is the problem. Any separation from 'the whole truth' is incomplete. My incomplete concepts may add to your 'whole truth', accept it or think about it
Make game too complex and lose large swaths of customers.

While Hardcore gamers may enjoy having to learn the in and outs of design to survive, the general populace just wants to be entertained.

Its possible to appease both, but few get it right.
Completely agree. I feel in some way I've been spoiled by PoE, because now I expect the same from other new games and I really shouldn't be. While a few games do deliver, most don't and I don't even end up trying them.
i miss UO :(

I am playing the adventure of link on my wii U, that shit is punishing, like 'makes 10% xp loss feel like a reward' punishing.
Hey...is this thing on?
I miss Planescape Torment. This is my all time favourite clasic RPG. Baldur's gate II is close. I have not found anything since to like as much. However on the Action RPG genre i enjoy massively new releases, like the Witcher as i have said numerous times, which is my all time favourite A RPG, and the souls series. There have been several great shooter RPGs, like borderlands and mass effect.

Did you know a sequel has been in development for the last year or so? If not, youre welcome :)

KISS, since the beginning of game development.

Everything else is niche titles just like PoE really is. Doesn't mean that they have no merit or can't reward dimensional for the heavier time investment. It's just a difference in learning curve.

More importantly you'll see the PoE syndrom way often if all games followed your paradigms: The game gets torn in its weight, features conflicting with each other. The development investment in such games is way higher and one could argue that it does not pay off in the end selling wise compared to Breakout Nr. 2 with more effects which is still fun as fuck and doesn't need as much babysitting.

But maybe niche titles are more interesting money wise now. I can only repeat myself, the F2P decision on PoE was a good one. You don't attract much customers anyway but relying on hardcore fans to constantly pump more money into the game than the average person is probably the way to go for such titles. I mean Mortal Online still exists. Who knows which new marketing methods might incentive more niche title development in the future.
