It depends a lot on your play style as well as your stash. I play HC solo self found/crafted which means I usually can't tweak my character a lot. I'll do most content ~ same level but grind areas to get items or currency to upgrade items before hitting the dangerous areas. If you trade you can skip doing that a lot. It also helps to have a big stash and keep items you anticipate using to level future characters - rings, belts and Amy's take up a whole stash tab for me. There seems to be a disconnect here. The rules Kripp set up are based on the current state of the game. If the gem states melee in it and the weapon is melee it is OK. The race rules were not created as an alternative to how GGG defines melee and ranged skills. So...get over it. If you don't like the rule set then don't play. It is that F'n simple.
