Random Crashes

Hi, I have a problem that PoE is crashing after a random time playing in party. Solo is fine but in party usually ends up in a blackscreen. It can take 1 hour or 2min untill it's crashing. So its not really possible to play with other ppl.

There is a error msg but it's not possible to make a screenshot because the blackscreen is always forcing in forground. Its something about D3D device gone in some microtransation files. Guess its something with the microtransaction skins/models.

I don't have problems in other games, so I don't think its the graphiccard. I have the bug since I came back to PoE about 1 week ago after a 1 year break. Yesterday I reinstalled windows because I changed my SSD and my soundcard and was hoping it's fixing my crashes.

I had the problem before and after the reinstall.

Pc-Specs before reinstall:

Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2
16GB RAM
64GB Samsung SSD + 1TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
Windows 8 64Bit

Pc-Specs after reinstall:

Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2
16GB RAM
250GB Samsung SSD + 1TB HDD + 64GB SSD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Creative Soundblaster Z
Windows 8.1 64Bit

I'm using the lastest available drivers for graphiccard (340.52), soundcard and mainboard.

I was running the PackCheck.exe and ggpk_defragment.exe and no errors. Before my reinstall I was also testing with the softwaresound and nosound param but it wasn't fixing the issue.

Next time you get the error, can you ALT+Tab to it and write it down (word for word) or take a screenshot then using the MS Windows capture tools (printscreen button, paste in photo editor)?

We need to know the exact error to have any chance of really knowing the cause. D3D errors are vast and each mean a different solution. In some cases, it is simply a driver/video card crash. In others, there is corruption with the content, or with the memory. etc. In others, it is a lack of proper D3D Pixel Shader Model 3.0 support....

So please get us the exact error if you can.

As I said, it it not possible to switch to the msg. Its instandly switching back to blackscreen. The game log is logging everything but no errors. The windowslogs only saving basic msg that the game has a problem.

I saw the msg a few times before i reinstalled and there was always something wiith microtransation files. Maybe sometimes its possible to switch. But untill now with new windows it wasn't possible to read the error.

But I deleted the old installation and made a fresh new installation.

Is there any way to get rid of all the fency buyable skins and models to avoid the crashes?

I'm aware of what you said, but I was asking if using ALT+Tab WAS possible to swap to the desktop or the error message directly (or Win+D).

we really need to know the exact error meagre to be able to diagnose it properly.

There is no way to disable to effects other than solo and not using them. you cannot remove them from other users.

I was able to make a screenshot in the half second its showing before the blackscreen is returning.

Does it only always happen with whirlwind, or does it come up with different files?

If it's always the same file, I'm going to assume that PackCheck wasn't run, or it wasn't run successfully (or you use Steam and you need to verify the cache/installation for PoE). Assuming since you ran PackCheck already and the ggpk_defrag, that you DON'T use Steam (as you aren't supposed to run those if you use Steam to play PoE).

Lets make sure you ran the PackCheck properly.

Find the PackCheck.exe in the Path of Exile folder, right-click on it and select "Run as Administrator". That should bring up a command window with the packcheck running. If it pops up and immediately goes away, something is wrong.

After that is done, locate the PathOfExile.exe file and run it as admin the same way. See if you still have issues then.

The D3DERR_DEVICELOST error is not a common one and either means there's a problem with DirectX or with the video drivers or video card. Assuming since you had the same error both before the re-install and after, that drivers and DirectX were properly re-installed.

Did you FORMAT your PC before re-install, or just re-install windows over top of what was already there? It's usually advised to format the PC before re-install to remove anything residual which can cause issues.
I switched the system ssd to a new ssd so there cant be any old stuff. No its not the steam version. At least before the reinstall it was also with other files. I'm not sure how its now. I have to try to get a screenshot of each error to be able to read the msg.

I was running the PackCheck as Admin and finished successfully.

Checking pack file Content.ggpk...
Done. All file hashes are in sync.

I wasn't running the game as Admin untill now. I'll try that.

Also made a BIOS-Update, reset defaults and adjusted some settings (AHCI, disable onboard sound, ...)

Here is a similar problem on the Diablo 3 forums:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/9245585600

The error typically means there's a problem with the GPU driver or the card itself, there are a couple of suggestions like:

-Post dxdiag
-Remove dust in computer
-Try several different drivers
-Monitor GPU temperature with HWMonitor

That is my thought as well at this point. If all the drivers and things have been replaced, the GPU being bad is the only other reason I could think of.
Just made some stresstest.

prime95 64bit -> CPU max temp 70°C
FurMark -> GPU constant max temp 78°C after 10mins
MemTest -> no errors after 15mins
Video Memory Test -> ok (but its only testing 1gb)
PoE after 1 hour was the max temp in HWMonitor 76°C, most of the time below 70°C

Guess it's not the gpu temp. PoE can crash in 5mins and FurMark was running more than 15mins. Maybe it's really the nvidia driver. Refore the reinstall I was using 332.21 and 340.52 from nvidia.

Strange thing I saw today, the nvidia driver shows its using 2GB VRAM + 2GB Shared RAM. The 660 TI has 2GB VRAM. The shared RAM is disabled in the BIOS, I have checked it. And usually the shared VRAM is only a BIOS setting and not a winodws or driver setting. Is PoE using more than 2GB VRAM?

I had only 1 hour today for PoE (run as Admin) and was in party w/o a crash but that means nothing.
