[SHORT ECONOMY GUIDE FOR NEW PLAYERS] NO MORE UNFAIR RATES

NOTE: A lot of players will hate this guide and will argue with me. They will tell me that I don't understand the economy nor the game. Scammers and flippers wont like this guide either. Well, if you write a comment, please do it to make this guide better.

After playing Path of Exile for quite a bit and going trough several leagues including standard, ambush and the short league I decided to write this guide to deal with “scammers.” But, what is a scammer?

Scammer: A scammer is a player that buys items and currencies at unfair rates.

Scamming is relatively easy because Path of Exile economy and itemization system are not simple. Mastering the economy requires play time and research. Also, the economy fluctuates as the league progresses until reaching standard prices or close enough. Scammers have several strategies to buy items from inexperienced players that need Chaos and Exalted Orbs to progress the game. The strategies used by “scammers” will be discussed later on this guide with classic a trade chat example. The next section of this guide will focus on something that I call “Economy progression line.”

Economy Progression Line In a Nutshell

1. Beginning of the league (week 1): There is basically not much currency. All players are trying to get the support and active gems they need. They will offer chaos, GCPs and regret orbs for them. Exalted orbs will be rare. Leveling items will be expensive and end game items cheap (but no one can pay end game items at this point).

2. Second week: During the second week, dedicated players will be already at lvl 70-80+ and currency will start to fly. People will be buying Cloak of Defiance, Lightning Coil, Carcass Jack for a minimum of 1-2Ex each. Same for Geoffrey Crest. Regrets and GCPs will still be 1:1c. Exalts will probably be 25c each. This is the time when you want to start alcheming every single rings and amulets you get higher than lvl 73. People will pay good money for resistances, life and Weapon elemental damage. Same for Foils and 5L chests. Fusing will be very cheap (2:1c).

3. Third week: When week third hits there are lots of currency going around plus end game items. However, orbs will be “cheap.” Here is when new players are easy targets. There will be players buying all your Orbs for Exalted or Chaos. Some Orbs are more valuable than Chaos. Why? Because they allow to perform end game crafting. After week third things start to stabilize. At the end of the league standard prices will be met and all players will try to sell their Exalted for Chaos to buy Orbs for Chaos.

End game crafting is extremely important and with the new Expansion and crafting system coming I believe orbs will be more expensive.

The most important end game crafting orbs are: Fusing, Jeweller's, Alterations and chromatic. Those orbs are expensive!!!! Alterations allow you to craft maps! Mapping is critical to progress the game and you'll need tons of alteration orbs to roll pack size and magic monster mods on the maps. Also, you can craft end game items with alterations, augmentations and regals. But crafting is not the main focus of this guide. End game flask crafting is also very important. Well crafted flasks will increase your survivability a lot, and alterations are need it for this. Jeweller's are also important to socket items. You have and approximated chance of 1:200 Jeweller's to get six sockets on an item and some thing like 0.9:1500 fuses to 6 Link a rare or unique chest piece. Because of the high value of the orbs in the end game scammers will use the classic strategy of “Buying all your orbs with my chaos.” If you see some one with that message: IT IS A SCAM!!!

Here is an example I took from the Standard League a week after the 1 month race:

Those are extremely UNFAIR RATES. New players that need chaos will trade their orbs. In special during the low level period. Some of the FAIR current rates on Standard League are approximated it like this:

Exalted 1 : 32 chaos
Fusings 40 : 1 Exalted
Chromatics 8 : 1 Chaos
Alterations 13 : 1 Chaos
Jeweller's 7 : 1 Chaos
Divine 1 : 1Ex
Regret 13 : 1Ex
Gemcutter's 12: 1Ex (those orbs are of extreme value!!!)

Comparing this rates to the ones in the photo, you will realized that this player is getting a very good deal trough scamming. There are many players doing this. Scammers will accumulate orbs and sell them at the end of the league for twice the price. This is going to happen mostly at mid and end of the League. But mates! Keep your orbs! Also, remember that standard prices are inflated. It is an old league and there is a lot of currency. This is just a reference and example.

The same thing goes for items. Before you sell or buy something go to check http://poe.xyz.is/ which is a data base with items with prices. It is a good reference but no always the true price.

I hope this will help new players to get more out of the game and avoid scam rates.

Enjoy the new Patch!

"supply and demand"

not to mention even you know what is the fair ratio, you still have to find the nice people to trade it with you. Whats the point if the seller have nothing to gain? I do agree that there have so many people trying to wipe off the others...

So, all people can do is to find those fair ratio. Or spend hours to try to meet a nice seller willing to trade with the perfect ration for you.

P.s. Hoping the new hideout will offer a better currency exchange...like options for vendor ex...

--edited--

also forgot to point that there have people dont have much time to play and so this is one of the way to get what currency they want fast.

Like few weeks ago, I need to get 15chaos and all I got is 300Alt...(been farming hoping to get something useful from the boss.) and I have to use one of those currency shop (or currency wipe off if you want to.) People offering 1:15 or 1:13 and when I tempt to go for 1:13, another 1:12 pop up and thats how I got my chaos...and then i have enough currency to buy the item that I need.

Before I made my decision, I have spent an hour in front of the trade chat to find the fair ratio.

Heck, you even can see lots of 1:15 or even 1:16 around.

I appreciate you trying to help new players, but your ratios are wrong. Furthermore trying to dictate ratios isn't useful unless you plan to constantly update. Instead I suggest people convert everything to exalts, and then determine ratios from there.

For example:

1ex=32c=8gcp => 4c=1gcp
1ex=32c=160jeweler => 1c=5jeweler
1ex=32c=40fuse => 3c=4fuse

Also calling currency traders "scammers" is an inappropriate use of the word. A scammer is someone who claims to provide you with a good or service in exchange for some payment, but after receiving that payment doesn't provide that good/service.

Your fair standard ratios for chromatics and gem cutters do not appear to be very accurate to me. 10 chromes to 1 chaos is actually a common price. I do not believe I have ever seen anyone getting 8:1.

Gem cutters to exalts is also commonly traded at 8:1. You have 12:1 as being fair which I would argue is the rip off.

There are certain items that people are willing to pay more for if they get a lot of them at same time for crafting. Chromes are such, chisels is another, fusings as well. I.e. you get the best price for them when you got many of them to sell to someone that wants to do a big craft or any other reason for not doing many trades.

It's RMT powered site with EXTREMELY outdated rates. Please don't use it (or sell me all your ex 24:1)
