What is the best solo class?

Classes in PoE are mostly just starting points in the massive skill tree. Their location in the tree makes them more suitable for certain builds, but in essence any class can be anything.

What would you like to play? Melee? 2H or 1H/shield? A caster? A summoner? A totem user? (For a beginner-friendly totem build, see the link in my signature.) Any other likes or dislikes?

(The Duelist has a very nice starting area, but it really doesn't matter much.)
Depends how far you want to take it. I'd say summoner, for allround cheapest, safest build that can do all maps and most, if not all, mapbosses - and this with good magic find ability aswell. Not the best build for Atziri though.

Witch would be best starting area for summoner.
Hejren / Triceps / Regnbuen / Sarinti / Striglen / Mareridt / Spoegelset / Doktoren / Dobbelganger / Skjoldtrold / Forkynderen

I would really love to go some sort of frost specc with the Witch with a lot of cc-freeze.. any suggestions?
There are many skills to choose viable enough.
Freezing Pulse, Ice Spear, Cold Snap, Glacial Cascade.

I would like to disagree about witch being best starting point for summoner. Close to witch start there is just one little minion cluster (which really can be skipped alltogether). Templar and scion have it much easier. If you really must have the witch minion cluster the cost is very high point wise.

That's actually what I played in the two-week charity league and continued with in Invasion.
Ice Spear makes bosses quite easy if you can keep decent range.

A more specialised build I've seen is one where the player uses Cold Snap with the Romira's Banquet unique ring and the Resolute Technique keystone passive node.
Since the spell can never crit, the player will always receive a Power Charge, allowing them to repeatedly cast Cold Snap without worrying about the cooldown.
