how to avoid (almost) instant death when opening strong boxes

Smokemine works pretty well, and it is fun to engange the blind monsters.

Leapslamming away works also fine.

What really helps is identifying the boxes, there are some nasty mods available that prevent the use of SmokeMine (like freezing your char), or dealing much damage (like with revived onslaught mobs and elementray damage and an extra rogue exile which stack very badly for you).
I've read that for best results with Lightning Warp as escape you should disable item highlight on ground.

If it's true, it may be also good for other skills.

Perhaps this is less burden on slow clients during this critical second.

I really doubt it helps when you got frozen from a box, or shocked, stunned whatever, it may help to reduce lag and desync (try to disable your antivrius product when playing helps a lot, also turning off shadows when you experiance problems with many objects on screen and reduce the screen resolution).

Totems like the decoy totem work pretty well too.

The log out idea with portal is interesting but since your portal is gone you need a way to get back to where you were.

I don't think it disappears? I know for sure in Diablo it did, but I'm pretty sure it stays in PoE.

The portal doesn't disappear, after relogging you get on another town instance, it is possible to ctrl-waypoint and find your specific town instance with the portal.
The best defense for opening a strong box:

Vaal Cold Snap + Trap (Add Concentrated effect on it, cold penetration, added cold damage, etc as you get them to make it even more powerful and freeze longer). Even if you lag, your frame rate drops and/or "freezes you when activated" this will always freeze the enemies as soon as they spawn 100% of the time because it's a trap and vaal cold snap always freezes. If you have increased spell/cold/elemental damage and/or high resistances, you'll always unfreeze before they do.

My personal experience with this
I have never ever ever ever ever died to a strong box when doing this. Ever. Did I mention never ever? I personally use Vaal Cold Snap + Trap + Concentrated effect on my cold witch. I just save up for my vaal cold snap for strong boxes. If I come across one and don't have enough souls, I just go out and get them, and come back to the box when I have the souls. Each box gives about half the souls in merciless that I need to have enough for the next box.

Since My cold witch is a permafreeze Cold snap/romira's banquet character, I don't mind staying surrounded because everything stays frozen. Although characters that need to get away you can use any of the other defenses/mobility skills I'm about to outline below.

Seriously, this trivializes 100% of strongboxes. In fact the hardest ones are just "guarded by a rogue exile"(contested) simply because they will be the most likely to survive whatever initial hits you get in. In that case, it's no harder than killing a rogue exile.

Other good defenses:

Cold Snap + Trap + Elemental Proliferation works too, if you want to do it without collecting souls, but is not 100% chance of success.

Lightning Warp (Without reduced duration, low level because leveling it reduces duration), as suggested, also helps. If you cast it before you open the chest, it'll even warp you away if you get frozen.

Other defenses that help, but will only most of the time:

Smoke mine is nice, but requires you to actually not be affected by being frozen or hit lag/frame rate drop from 60 monsters being added to the screen instantly. I have a very powerful computer but I see a framerate drop (Although not completely) when a lot of monsters get added. I can only imagine people with a more average computer could have some boxes one shotting them before they even knew what hit them.

Like smoke mine, there's also other movement skills, like leap slam and whirling blades.

Quartz Flasks will allow you to clip through monsters so they won't get you stuck if you are simply running away from the box.

Another poster mentioned conversion traps. I haven't done this personally yet, but I have used it before and it's great for monsters to take hits for you, and may be the difference between living and dying.

Vaal Skill of choice + Trap Like the vaal cold snap, this has a chance to one shot everything out of the boxes at the cost of having to gather souls. Vaal Ice nova, Vaal Arc for example. The trap gem makes sure it goes off at the appropriate time while also getting a nice damage boost. Even if it doesn't kill everything, it's probably killed enough of the trash that they can't just 1 shot you from all attacking at the same time.

I've covered everything I can think of right now. If I think of more I'll post them.
Quartz and Quickilver work fine for me.
Also haveing flasks with mods that hekp in all possible situations. (Stopp Burning, stop bleeding, remove curse etc.)

Tried lightning warp but the delay is a killer. I need to try smoke mine. So far, have had best luck with quartz flask and prayer!
Censored.

Using Warp needs some practice, you want to click the box just before the delay expires. I used it sucesfully until high level but now it teleports me so fast that I dont have the time to click the box even when warping to the edge of screen :). Now I just activate granite and let myself get surrouded and press my attack button. Whatever spawns is instagibbed (IB splash FB)
