Not getting Chromatic Orb to work now, what has changed?

Am still a newb at this game, but the Chromatic Orb was working, but I don't recall that the socket had a gem in it.
Now can't get the Chromatic Orb to do anything---with or without a gem in the socket I wish to change. Have been trying to get the red sockets to turn green or blue. Any help would be appreciated, Thank you |

If the gear is a pure armor piece getting green or blue sockets may be hard. Pure armor is heavily red based sockets, evasion gear is green based, and energy shield gear is blue based. To get an idea of what I speak, read the section on sockets here: http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Skills

Just in case this is the scenario...
If you have used a vaal orb on something and it is corrupted you can no longer use currency items on them, so chromatic orbs will no longer work on that item. |

Had to look up Vaal Orb, no! haven't come across one of them yet. My highest level toon so far is to level 20.

is the item on your guy or in your inventory?

If the item is equipped, you can't use chromes on it.

Where did you get the armor? Does it already say "corrupted" on it?

If it dropped as a "Mirrored" Item, from an Ambush Chest, then it cannot be altered in any way via Currency. (As it is the "reflection" of an Item, not the actual Item, flavor-wise. ~.^)
