Crossfire HD 5770's, I think PoE killed one of my cards....
Hey all I haven't been in PoE since closed beta and I have the exact same PC config I had back then. I have 2 Radeon HD 5770 grahics cards in Crossfire mode.
I started playing the game and about 5 minutes into it my computer shut itself off. When I turned my PC back on I got a BSOD stating something about unable to access some file do to it being write only or something. I did a system repair and got my PC up and going again but when I went to check my settings in CCC I noticed the Crossfire option was no longer available. I tried re-installing drivers but that didn't work. I ended up taking my side panel off and blowing out the inside just in case it was dust. Fired my PC back up and this time Crossfire was showing but Overdrive was not showing. In the Application Setting under Crossfire though there were no options to choose from. I tried disabling Crossfire but then my screen just went black. Restarted PC and Crossfire option is missing from CCC again. I also checked my system info. and it is only showing one display adapter. So in conclusion I think PoE may have killed my second 5770 card somehow. Anyone else have a similar problem, and if so is there a solution? Thank you in advance. |

My Geforce 9800 GT and died almost spoiled with Path of Exile. The temperature jumped from 85º degrees to 118º degrees, with the resolution of 1920x1080 and All Options Enabled. I changed the resolution to 1024x768 Path of Exile and changed all the options for the minimum and the temperature of the video card dropped to 85º Degrees

" So you did activate the overdrive-function in the CCC? Did you read the warning message when doing this? Activating this voids the warranty of the cards, bc of overclocking. Also keep in mind that the Radeon HD 5770-cards are quite old, as far as I remember, these were cards from 2009 - so if these cards were running OC since 2009 you should be happy that they lasted this long;-) As for a simple test, try running the system with only one gfx-card in the first PCIE 16x-slot - Swap the cards to figure out which one isn't working - or if both work in a "single card setup" there might be a different problem, like a problem with the powersupply of faulty file-system or whatever. Also remember, when meddling with hardware: At least use a antistatic wrist strap and you should know what you are doing :-) " And last: It is nearly(!) impossible for a software to 'brick' hardware...also there are some historic cases back from the 80' :-) " Translate: No propper cooling for 100% load of the GFX-Card Last edited by StefanK#0071 on Jan 31, 2013, 5:45:12 AM

You know the CCC overdrive gives false temps, I really hope you were not getting temp readings from that POS

NO I do not OC. I read that warning and thus have never OC'd. Just fyi, after all my problems I was still able to play Borderlands 2 on high settings and Physx set on Medium and played for over 2 hours straight with no problems.
I turned my PC on today after work and my Overdrive and Crossfire options are both available. Crossfire options are not showing in the Application Settings though, so I'm not sure what that means. I am afraid to try PoE out again as I can't set Crossfire to Desabled for PoE as the option does not show. I tried just outright disabling Crossfire but my screen went black and never refreshed, so not sure what is going on. I'll be getting my tax return soon so I'll probably just upgrade to a 3Gb single card like the XFX 7970 DD Ghz edition and maybe that will help some. I know my cards are a little old but they still can play most games on high settings. But yeah, a 3Gb single card is sounding better to me now, probably better for airflow in the case as well, that is one thing I don't like about Crossfire, the cards are too close together. Anyway if anyone has any suggestions for the time being I'm open to anything at this point. Still a little afraid to fire up PoE again though considering what happened. " |
