People have done tests on fusings/jewelers. Was curious of any one knew of data for Vaal orbs on Gems. So t(-.-t) at your unhelpful comment.

so far i got:
+3% quality
-4% or -5% quality
+1 to lvl
changed the 20/20 into a vaal gem 20/20 (it was summon skellis)

my biggest concern with using a vaal orb on skill gems is the following:

i get a +1 on skill lvl on the gem (ok, I am happy...so far), but very soon, its gonna be possible to level them up to 30 anyways, since GGG just incresed the level range from 20 to 30 and then, having used a vaal orb on a skill gem was just risky without any meaningful reward. I would like to hear a GGG statement on that.

This is silly. They added data to the skills to allow them to scale up to 30 due to + level of gem stats on items. I believe it's currently possible to get some gems up to 29-30 (corrupted level 4 empower in certain items).

While I have no idea if they will ever change gems to level past 20, the recent change to add data up to level 30 for all gems doesn't really have any inference to doing so.

My 21 arc in a +1 and +2 lightning staff is lvl 28, as far as i can imagine thats as high as u can get a gem.

Noob question, when do you vaal a gem?

1. when they hit L20
2. After you've turned it from a L20 to a L1/20%Q
3. When its L20+20%Q

It's #3 right?

I think I saw on here before someone said the probability was about 1/6 to get the +1 gem level.

I am leveling up a few ethereal knives in my alternate weapon slot so I can do a batch and hopefully get lucky.

21+1+2=24. If you have a level 4 empower, that's +3 so 27.

Where am I missing the last number?

+1 to gems supports empower too. It's a corrupted level 4 empower so it becomes level 5.

This is about the worst possible outcome
