Poe is dead, QQ thread inside [Invasion/hc]

Hey guys,

well, actually my toon is dead, maybe not Poe.

the thread title is just a joke by the way, I might not have the best humor though.
This is more about dying to lag/disconnection than anything else. I do know it is nobody's fault if you die from lag, disconnection or even desync.

Basically I lost my main character in Invasion league due to lag/disconnexion. Had around 80% of my hp while running in lunaris 3, checked ping (f11) flat curve at 500ms, instant alt f4 as usual in this kind of case. Rebooted internet, relaunched poe => welcome to the standard league.
5.9k hp to run lunaris is not enough to survive a disconnection apparently... As far as I know there was not even a rare or magic mobs around, just few white mobs. That's a lame death, I don't know what else I could say. No small rectangular window noticing you are DEAD, but still you are.

I don't understand why there isn't any mechanics to prevent death from such event. I don't think it would be that complicated to implement. What I believe is GGG don't really care about this. Basically without a good/stable internet connection all hardcore leagues are not playable in the long run. Many would say go play softcore and stop QQing. That's pretty sad since I find no point in playing an ARPG without the risk to lose my character.

Now I have no motivation to play the game anymore, not willing to start over after having lost around half of all I have in this league. HC league ? Well, it's not fun to play it since very few are still playing, and to be honest it's boring to play the game when you already have all the gear you want to have. I have saved over hundred exalted, plus tons of other currency and finally realized it is a pointless. That's the main reason why I like reset, and new leagues in general.

Do you have some experience like mine you would like share, and how did you deal with it ?

This is not a QQ post, I just wanted to share my experience. For now I think I will take a pause from poe, most likely not going back to invasion. Perhaps I'll play again poe in the future 4months leagues.

Sorry for you loss, I know how it feels. I really hope one day GGG will do something about it. The game is great, Invasion in itself is awesome (well, could be better, still it is very enjoyable as it is).

I'm currently cruising around merci, not over leveled, less than 3k hp, playing from a third world 3g internet connection tethered from my phone. I'm loving it, haven't been this excited playing PoE since I first discovered it. Pretty sure I'll die before I finish merci, but fun is fun and I'm having loads of it.
Invasion lover here, though I play casually. (Died three times so far, didn't even reach cruel yet)

I know it's not the best idea, but how about playing ambush and give yourself a rule that if you didn't die from disconnect, delete your character right away?

I know self implemented rules are easily broken, but you seemed like the type of person that would really stick to it and delete your character if it's your fault.

I died from desynch today. That is 10x78 Maps. YAY!

I died on Inv a couple hours ago.

I realized I was desync'd, threw in an /oos, and found myself dead upon resync with my body lying between both an exile and an invasion boss (damn porcupine fuck and his/her/it's screen melting fire bullshit) that were not there previously.

It sucked. But shit happens. Planning my next roll now, and will get a start on it after a very late dinner.

...narf
I have packet loss all the time, every day. My experience of this game is basically an RNG rollercoaster, hoping not to lose packets while standing in a dangerous pack.
vaal or no balls
Well the server is trying to make love to itself at the moment (Its going crazy) and I love PoE, but if this becomes a constant thing I wont be able to recommend PoE to my friends anymore.

Well, I'm not really sure if I will quit poe or not. Several hours ago, I was 100% possitve, now not so much. I still feel screwed though. I have a new build ideas, but it would require more currencies than I have at my disposal :s

I wanted to make an elem crit archer around the new unique bow, Windripper, but to do so I need this so called bow, and sadly I hardly have half of the currency needed just to buy this bow.
Losing a character is not only about losing it actually, but also losing the value of the gear on it. My toon was lvl78, which to me is quite high level, but not so much. I usually lvl my character to lvl80ish, never had the motivation to reach the 90s.

I may just hope to find something of value while leveling; who knows. Anyway Windripper is not that expensive in Invasion, and I hope their price will go down.

About playing in Ambush, I don't think it suits me. I don't like softcore leagues also because I don't want to implement myself rules I am not sure to be able to stricly follow. I do love the harsh rule of dying in hardcore leagues, I just feel it is too unfair when it is only due to internet.

As far as I remember I have lost 6 characters in Invasion so far, 4 of them were act1 normal ^^ I needed time to understand that I couldn't kill every invader/corrupted areas naked. Beside my last loss, sniff; I have ripped a lvl60ish char in act2 merciless to the totem bitch invader (I don't know her name, but she is alike these female throwing arc and tempest shield in act3). Did not pay enough attention, and let her put 2* fireball totem in melee range. Even with 75% fire resist it hurts. And it was just after her buff (and the buff of the other totem invaders). Fun fact, at the very moment I died I was wondering if I should skip her or not, having my head in the clouds, not paying enough attention was MY mistake. I admited it, and went over it. Actually this is from this kind of death that you learn, and it is always somehow an honor to see one of my character dies in action. The so famous windows poped up acknoledging the fall and it is time to think about my mistakes that have driven to the death of my character.

But for ek toon there was no such thing, I'm just pissed off about it. Well, it is just a game, so I am not that upset, but still it is unfair. I quited Diablo 3 for the very same reason, I lost my main character (a ranger, lvl60 paragon.. I don't remenber exactly the lvl, but it was pretty high), and all the accumulated top end game gear due to a... server disconnection (which is far worse than a disconnection due to my own internet provider). People saying Poe is horribad about server stability should try out Diabl3 (I don't think blizzard improved it), sure there are way less desync in D3, but as far as I know the lag was very very bad/ server instability, kick/bug/unable to connect (the first few days after the release it was just a joke, paying 60 bucks for a game you actually are unable to play, time to read bro'. Anyway thanks to this unfair loss I finally quited Diablo 3, a game that was quite boring, that I have been playing less and less before I stopped once for all. Diablo 3 had so much potential, Blizzard just ruined it in almost every way, an ARPG without a skill tree ? without any kind of choice or fake liberty ? without any kind of subtlety or game in-depth ? a gear optimization consisting only on stacking the same stats to infinity, with no alternative choices ? Well, Diablo 3 was to me a big dissapointment, as for many other. That game wasn't enjoyable though, just a poor replyability, and nothing to do with Diablo 2 in-depth. If it had another name I think people wouldn't have been so harsh with it.

Anyway, I really hope some guys from GGG would read this thread or other thread like this. Improving server stability, fixing desync, implementing mechanics to prevent death from disconnection should be their main goal. At least this is what I would like to be. Implementing new contents is nice, but seriously many more people would play POE if there was less desync/lag. This game is not full of bugs, it is clearly not a beta anymore (well anyway, it never was really buggy). But about lag/desync/disco it still sucks. If an offline mode would be implemented I would be really pleased. Sometimes my connection doesn't permit me to play at all. Adding new stuff is cool and all, still it doesn't fix the real problems here, which are ===> Desync/ lag /disconnection. If it is only about money I would be willing to pay for it. This game is a free to play, I understand that, less money should mean more technical issue I understand that. What I really don't understand is why adding new pacths with a lot of new stuff and still doing nothing about what most people ask for ?

I would like to see a complete reshaping of the client-host interaction in POE. I'm pretty sure it is possible to set up a mid way between a game full of cheats and a game full of lag/desync/disco. Isn't possible to implement some sort of coding to protect data from hacking ? Is the issue the money to implement such things ? I'm far from being a specialist, but I do believe there is space for improvement in that matter. And the player base would be more than pleased to see less desync. The overuse of mobility skills in Poe is a death wish. I have been doing many fast piety runs with mf culler lately (I died during one of these runs), the desync is just terrible while going fast to the boss and skipping all mobs. Typing /oos every 10s is just fucking boring.

In addition a new mechanic to prevent death from client disconnection would be more than welcome. I am 100% possitive it is possible, if it is not I would like to hear why exactly because I don't see how the host couldn't be aware that there is no reply from the client. No reply from the client means lag/possible disconnection => means you actually are not playing.
Simply implement a rule that if a death occurs during a time, or shortly after, the client didn't respond it doesn't count, I mean like a small roll back of the character/ or of the instance. I don't know how easy/ viable it would be do something like this, but I would defintly like to know what GGG says about this.
